Snooker stars and Boyzone singer fly In for John Virgo Memorial Golf Day in aid of La Cala Lions

Published

Stars of snooker and rugby and musicians gathered at Miraflores Golf in Mijas on Sunday to honour the memory of the late and well-loved John Virgo through a charity golf tournament. A full day of golf began with a 9.30am shotgun tee-off and raised plenty of funds for the Lions Club and all their charitable exploits. Some 117 tickets had been sold for the event, although the previous night’s England, Norway match might have had something to do with the numbers dropping to 90 in the morning. John Virgo had become an adopted Mijeño and played regularly at both Miraflores Golf Club and Mijas Golf, as well as supporting local charity events on the Costa del Sol.

Apt challenge at the 19th hole

Golfers faced a unique test at the 19th hole in true tribute to John. Participants potted coloured golf balls, symbolising snooker balls, through a croquet hoop to score points. This activity added a fun element connected to Virgo’s snooker background.

Star guests make journey to Costa del Sol

Long-time friends of John Virgo flew to the Costa del Sol specifically to pay tribute. Three-time world snooker champion Steve Davis attended the tournament. Snooker player Ken Doherty joined the occasion. Former Ireland international Keith O’Neill, Boyzone member Keith Duffy, ex-rugby player Mal O’Kelly and former Wales international Paul Jones made up the guest list.

Family members attend in force

John Virgo’s wife attended the event with their son, daughter and grandchildren. Family presence added a personal dimension to the tribute for a man who had made Mijas his second home.

Early fundraising success for Lions Club

Estimates placed fundraising efforts for the Lions Club at around €10,000 before raffles and the auction even began. Final counts remain pending as organisers tally all contributions from the day.

Hugely generous prizes

Donations came from all around the area’s businesses, including El Oceano and Christy’s. Raffle prizes included dinners for two at Scala Group restaurants. Dining vouchers at el Olivo in la Cala and Talk of the Town featured in the lots. Private performances by Ricky Lavazza, Laura Elen or Nicky Kate offered further incentives. A Persian charm necklace authenticated and valued at €800 by Anthony in Fuengirola counted among the generous contributions.

New Tricks provide rocking entertainment

New Tricks entertained by belting out some trusted classics of rock and pop. Singer Pete Carter earned commendation from Keith Duffy of Boyzone for the set.

Outstanding service from Spikes team

Ludo at Spikes and the team provided exceptional service as always. A massive barbecue kept everyone content despite the intense July heat.

Estepona Fair Hit By Wave Of Phone Thefts

Organised crime groups have yet again targeted the annual Estepona Fair, leaving more than 30 festivalgoers without their mobile phones. Local police have confirmed they are investigating a wave of reports filed by victims inside the fairground’s popular party tents (casetas). Officers have said that this type of criminal activity has become an unfortunate, recurring trend during the town’s yearly celebrations.

How the pickpocketing gangs operate

Euro Weekly reader, and long-term Estepona resident, Steve said, “Young lads, you can spot pickpockets if you’re looking for them, just milling around. Some of them look like they are on their own. No one goes to the feria on their own! While people are chatting and drinking they move in. I shooed one off the other day. Others work together in small groups. One will snatch a phone or purse, hand it to another who then runs off. Then, the original thief starts playing the victim and denying he knows the one who ran off.”

Crowded and noisy festival environments provide the perfect cover for these highly coordinated networks. Gang members sometimes act in structured groups of three to avoid detection and to create a distraction while their friend moves in to rummage in a victim’s handbag.

The Distraction and Snatch method is very common. One thief identifies a target, usually focusing on individuals with phones peeking out of back pockets or unzipped bags. They use the bustling crowd to bump into the victim and quickly snatch the phone.

The Escape: This second individual quickly hands it to a third person, who runs from the area entirely.

Victims who notice their phone is missing almost immediately face an impossible task. Confronting the person next to them gets no results, as the physical evidence is already far away from the initial crime scene.

Safety advice for festivalgoers

Police forces are maintaining a strong presence across the Estepona fairgrounds to deter these opportunists and identify suspects. Visitors can protect themselves by adopting a few simple habits. Keeping valuables in zipped bags worn across the front of the body drastically reduces the risk of theft. Back pockets should never be used for storing phones or wallets. Finally, maintaining high awareness during chaotic moments or inside packed venues is crucial to keeping belongings safe.

Marbella reinvented: Costa del Sol City heading for image change

Published

Marbella is looking for new appeal further than its long-established draw for global millionaires. Decades of success in the Costa del Sol city rest on year-round fine weather, strong privacy measures and upscale living options. City leaders now want to push further with ambitions to make the area Europe’s own Silicon Valley equivalent.

It seems that startups favour the Costa del Sol location over most others. Luxury property developments sit near growing coworking facilities and office spaces. Property agents report a clear move away from mainly retired wealthy arrivals. Talent from many countries and age groups is now investing more in the destination.

Business centre head reflects on talent attraction

“In place of drawing those nearing retirement, young talent is arriving instead,” says Christian Rasmussen, chief executive of the business centre The Pool. Few places worldwide have such high talent levels. This represents a goldmine opportunity.” He remarked in a recent interview for Bloomberg. “Marbella’s future will differ greatly from its present form,” he explained. “Efforts now focus on altering views of Marbella, moving it from a leisure destination to a key base for contemporary professionals,” he told Bloomberg.

Property developers are currently aiming to create a lasting European base for international founders and investors. The location combines all the sunshine you could want with accessible luxury features similar to those in the United Arab Emirates.

International property investors getting younger

Pandemic years brought noticeable buyer changes. Pure Living Properties’ The Marbella 2025 market report identifies younger purchasers are now keen on full-year living and working arrangements. British, Scandinavian, German and Dutch buyers remain prominent, yet demand is growing from the United States, Canada, Poland and Gulf nations.

Artur Loginov, chief executive at estate agency Drumelia, observed clear progress. “New residents, investors and hotels reached Marbella after the pandemic and raised area standards. Once simply an attractive town, the place now operates as a full city,” he said. “Recent years delivered new gyms, restaurants, hotels and global brand outlets matching New York or Monaco levels.”

Marbella council on board

Local government initiatives are supporting this new direction. Cooperation between Marbella Council and centres such as The Pool is going out of their way to promote foreign business investment. Visits to China and the US with the mayor are being used to promote Marbella as an entry point to Europe. Infrastructure gains include expanded international schools and modern amenities that suit professional families.
