Spain Urges EU To End Association Agreement With Israel

Spain will ask the European Union to end its association agreement with Israel over alleged violations of international law, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said on Sunday.

Spain has recently criticised Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government over the Gaza conflict and Israel’s attacks on neighbouring Lebanon.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu has accused Spain of “hypocrisy and hostility.”

“On Tuesday, Spain’s government will present a proposal to the EU that the European Union break off its association agreement with Israel,” Sánchez told a political rally in Andalusia.

He added that Israel “violates international law” and therefore “cannot be a partner of the European Union … it’s as simple as that.”

Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Saar responded with a social media post in Spanish, saying his country would “not accept hypocritical lectures from someone who keeps ties with totalitarian regimes,” citing Turkey and Venezuela under former leader Nicolas Maduro.

The June 2000 association agreement between the EU and Israel includes a clause requiring respect for human rights.

Spain and Ireland first called for a review of the accord in 2024 amid concerns over tactics used in the Gaza war, which followed Hamas attacks on Israel in October 2023.

Spain’s recognition of a Palestinian state the same year infuriated Israel.

Sánchez has since stepped up his criticism of Netanyahu’s government, calling Israeli strikes on Iran “a breach of international law” contributing to “a more uncertain and hostile international order.”

Spain, Ireland and Slovenia sent a letter to the European Commission on Friday calling for the agreement with Israel to be discussed at the next meeting of EU foreign ministers.

Earlier this month, Netanyahu accused Spain of waging a hostile diplomatic campaign against his country and barred Madrid from taking part in the work of a US‑led centre created to help stabilise post‑war Gaza.

“Israel will not remain silent in the face of those who attack us,” Netanyahu said at the time.

“I am not prepared to tolerate this hypocrisy and hostility. I will not allow any country to conduct a diplomatic war against us without facing an immediate price.”

El partido de Anoeta comenzó como una celebración, casi como una extensión natural de la noche gloriosa vivida días atrás en La Cartuja. La Real Sociedad, aún envuelta en el eco reciente de su Copa del Rey, ofrecía el trofeo a su gente mientras el Getafe, disciplinado, cumplía con el pasillo de honor. Hubo aplausos, sonrisas y una sensación compartida de reconocimiento. Durante unos minutos, el fútbol fue lo de menos. Anoeta latía al ritmo de una felicidad reciente, todavía sin digerir. Pero el fútbol no entiende de homenajes prolongados. En cuanto el balón echó a rodar, la ceremonia quedó atrás y emergió el partido real. Y ahí, el Getafe dejó claro que no había viajado para ser figurante. Nunca lo hace. Menos aún ahora, cuando pelea por un objetivo que hace unos meses parecía inalcanzable.

La primera parte fue, en esencia, el guion que la Real jamás habría querido escribir. Y, a la vez, el que el Getafe ejecutó con precisión quirúrgica. Los donostiarras tuvieron la ocasión de adelantarse en una acción que pudo cambiar el rumbo del encuentro: penalti por mano de Abqar tras un cabezazo de Brais Méndez, señalado tras la intervención del VAR. Era una oportunidad de oro, pero Brais falló. El error no solo mantuvo el empate, sino que sembró una inquietud que el Getafe supo interpretar. Hasta ese momento, el equipo de Bordalás apenas había inquietado a Remiro. Pero no necesita demasiado para hacer daño. En uno de sus escasos acercamientos, un centro de Juan Iglesias acabó convertido en tragedia local: Gorrotxategi, en su intento por despejar, envió el balón hacia su propia portería con una parábola imposible para Remiro.

A partir de ahí, el partido entró en el terreno donde el Getafe se siente más cómodo: interrupciones, duelos constantes, ritmo fragmentado. Ese otro fútbol que domina con maestría. La Real, atrapada entre la resaca emocional y la frustración del marcador, empezó a perder claridad. El equipo madrileño no solo ganaba; lograba algo más valioso: desesperar al rival. Y en ese terreno, pocas veces concede ventajas.

La entrada al campo de Oyarzabal y Barrenetxea, dos de los héroes recientes de la final copera, agitó el partido. La Real Sociedad encontró por fin algo parecido a la velocidad que le había faltado durante minutos. Aramburu llegó a rozar el empate en una acción que terminó siendo un espejismo: su disparo se estrelló contra el palo, pero la jugada quedó invalidada por fuera de juego de Oskarsson. Fue un aviso sin consecuencias, otro golpe de frustración para un equipo que empezaba a acumular méritos sin premio. Barrenetxea y Kubo insistían desde los costados, encarando, obligando al Getafe a replegarse con más intensidad si cabe.

Pero el equipo de Bordalás no se descompone en esos escenarios. Al contrario, se siente cómodo en la incomodidad. Supo resistir, enfriar el partido, llevarlo a ese terreno en el que cada minuto pesa más que el anterior y cada interrupción vale oro. La Real empujaba, sí, pero lo hacía sin la claridad necesaria para romper un entramado defensivo que rara vez concede más de lo imprescindible. El tramo final fue un ejercicio de supervivencia para el Getafe y de ansiedad para la Real. Anoeta, que había comenzado la tarde entre cánticos y celebración, terminó instalada en una tensión creciente. No hubo continuación para la fiesta. El Getafe se llevó tres puntos que refuerzan su candidatura a algo que ya no parece una quimera.

Spain’s far-right Vox party returned Wednesday to the regional government of Extremadura after reaching a deal with the conservative Popular Party (PP), renewing their alliance ahead of a general election expected in 2027.
