More than 400 locals, visitors, and international residents gathered under the shade from early in the morning of Thursday, August 27, to enjoy a summer classic that bridges cultural divides through mouth-watering food.

A delicious, decade-long tradition born from community integration

What began fourteen years ago as a thoughtful initiative to welcome the growing British community has evolved into an anticipated highlight of the town’s International Day celebrations. Local representative Eulogio Sánchez highlighted how this spirit of integration remains stronger than ever, driven by a dedicated team of British and Irish volunteers. Working from the crack of dawn, the organisers donned their aprons to cook and serve an authentic fry-up, complete with fried eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, and baked beans, all for just €2.50 per plate.

An increasing number of Spanish residents also join the feast each year to savour the hearty dish. Local officials praised the festivity committee and foreign volunteers for their hard work, noting that the gathering serves as clear evidence of the harmony and integration among Roda’s diverse cultures.

The International Day celebrations continued well into the evening with a lively community dinner that saw roughly 1,000 grilled burgers served alongside live music. The festive atmosphere set the stage for the following, action-packed weekend, featuring a Friday night of barbecue and rumba rhythms, as well as children’s activities, a traditional street party, and late-night migas The festivities concluded on Sunday, August 30 with a morning sardine roast and the solemn mass and procession honouring the patron saint at 8:30pm.

One Costa del Sol reader wrote to ask Euro Weekly News a simple question: Is it normal for a newspaper to keep taking money after a three-month trial, then refuse a clean cancellation? Our answer, unfortunately, was “yes”. And, no, it wasn’t us.

He lives in Estepona. Some time ago he gave an English-language title in Spain a public-interest story, free of charge. That piece ran, and readers took interest. Earlier this year he went offering another strong public-interest story. This time staff at the paper said he should pay for a three-month online trial first, before his story was considered. He had only ever read the free printed paper before. But, if that’s what it would take to alert the people, so be it.

He trusted the relationship he had formed with said publication. So, he signed up. He was never that keen on reading news on a screen and was unsure he would stay with the subscription after the trial. Three months passed. So did month four and month five. Money kept leaving his account on time each month. He had not picked through the legal small print to see how hard an exit would be. Who does? Who has the money to employ a lawyer to be by their side every time they sign up to an online subscription?

Trust is worth its weight in gold. Month six arrived on that 3-month trial, and the charge arrived with it, yet again.

He called to ask the title to stop the subscription and stop taking cash every month from his bank. Staff at the publication said there was little they could do. Billing carried on. He still did not want the product. He did not want the charges in his account. All of this started with a man offering a genuine public-interest news story for nothing to the publication.

Banks in Spain tell customers there is “nothing we can do”

He went to his bank. Staff gave the line so many readers in Spain already know: “there is nothing we can do”, be it debit card or credit card. Euro Weekly News hears that answer often enough to stand by it. A new card with a slightly different number, usually for a fee, is what gets offered. Your account number is treated as if anyone who holds it can keep withdrawing funds, month after month, and you are left asking, “who’s bank account is it anyway?”

Stopping a payment is not the same as ending a contract, which is why a written cancellation still matters. Even so, people who ask their bank to halt an unwanted subscription charge in Spain are routinely sent away empty-handed. Readers who have lost money to card and text scams already know how hard it can be to get a bank to move in your favour. A Supreme Court line on unauthorised transfers is a different fight. Recurring subscription billing is the one where the shrug of shoulders is most familiar.

Euro Weekly News does not charge readers a monthly fee. Advertising pays for free news. Other titles are willing to abuse your trust with a “special”, “one-time offer” “trial price” and wording most people never read or have the time to translate from Legalese to English.

This trick is not only a Spain problem

Hard exits are common in the UK as well. One well-known British newspaper (possibly the best-known), according to its own monthly conditions, will only take a cancellation if the customer calls a certain UK number. That number is not free. It is not a cheap rate. Calling it from Spain costs ordinary international rates. Then . . . nobody answers, of course.

Regulators call the design a “roach motel”: easy to walk in, grim to leave. Phone-only cancel lines, chatbots that never quite reach a human, guilt buttons, “pause” instead of stop, and trials that flip to a full price with no second “yes, are all part of the same family?”

Brussels, Madrid consumer groups trying to change the rules

EU consumer law already gives a 14-day cooling-off right on many distance contracts. A 2023 update to the Consumer Rights Directive now requires an online withdrawal function (in practice a clear and firm “cancel” button) for that cooling-off window. Traders selling to EU customers through a website or app have had to provide it since June 19 2026. Details are on the European Commission’s consumer-law review pages.

Unfortunately, that button does not yet cover every later monthly renewal. Officials know the gap in the law is there. A Digital Fairness Act is on the Commission’s 2026 work list after a fitness check found silent auto-renewals and blocked cancellations still cost households real money every month.

Germany has already required an online cancellation button for ongoing contracts since 2022. France uses a three-click exit. Spain’s Ley 10/2025 on customer service tells firms running fixed-term subscriptions that auto-renew to warn customers at least 15 days before the next charge and to make a cancellation simple. Spain’s consumer ministry has set that warning rule out in plain language. But many continue to ignore it.

BEUC, the European consumer umbrella, wants a cancel button plus the right to end an auto-renewing subscription at any time with a month’s notice. Its Digital Fairness Act paper spells that out. Spain’s FACUA and OCU already help people chase refunds. But, cross-border rows can go to the European Consumer Centre in Spain and take years. And the money continues flowing out of your account!

Gyms, trials, apps and “protection” add-ons use the same playbook Newspapers are not the only offenders. Free trials that grab a card and convert without a second confirmation do it. Intro prices that jump. Monthly deals that become an annual hit. Gyms with notice windows designed so you miss them. Kids’ apps on a parent’s card. Printer ink, cloud storage, domains, connected-car extras and “account protection” ticked at checkout. Loyalty traps that hold your archive or email hostage if you leave.

Signing up took a simple form and a card. Leaving should take the same. Mind who you give your card number to.
