The Costa Calida hub of Cartagena has celebrated four incredible days of live performances, festivities, and cultural heritage: thousands of people flocked to the major Murcian city to experience the Carthaginians and Romans festival, which featured concerts, sporting events, guided tours, and other activities that enthralled visitors and residents alike.

Officially recognised as an Event of International Tourist Interest, this legendary festival marks the city’s return to the 3rd century BC with colour, costume, community, and concerts.

Live music and massive crowds at La Rambla

For the concerts alone, which took place from Thursday, September 24 to Sunday, September 27, nearly 15,000 tickets were sold and audiences sang and danced along to popular music by artists L0rna, Camela, Siloé, Carlos Ares, and more local talents. The concerts took place on the esplanade of the La Rambla Shopping Centre, which transformed into one of the main musical hubs of the city during the vibrant festival. The artists combined urban music, pop, electronic music, and other varied genres, ensuring there was something for everyone at the event.

Recreating ancient history on the city streets

Aside from the great music, the festivities were also a prime opportunity for residents and visitors in Cartagena to enjoy the cultural and historical atmosphere. The opening of the festival recreated the epic clash between Punic troops and Roman legions during the Second Punic War, and the explosive opening weekend set a triumphant tone for the rest of the event. The weekend festivities officially began on Friday evening with the ceremonial lighting of the Sacred Fire at the archaeological park of El Molinete. The sacred flame ignited a wave of celebration that swept toward the historic centre, which led to a packed Plaza del Ayuntamiento.

Poetry slams, water polo, and rich cultural heritage

Other highlights for the festival included the Carthaginian Grand Parade, a magnificent spectacle featuring elaborate armour, banners, and period costumes marching down Calle Mayor, Plaza de España, and the Alameda de San Antón; the 15th edition of the National Poetry Slam Championship, which brought together top performers from 34 regional branches across Spain for three days of intense live competition; and special heritage routes where visitors could learn about Cartagena’s extensive and fascinating history.

In addition, local sports teams competed in national cup fixtures; the 9th City of Cartagena Waterpolo Tournament drew more than 200 athletes and 15 teams from regions across Spain, including Madrid, Valencia, and Granada; and live flamenco performances filled the evening air with colour and sound at local venues.

Celebrating another successful edition of the Carthaginians and Romans

At the end of the festivities, friends and neighbours in the city celebrated another successful edition of the Carthaginians and Romans, and are already looking forward to the incredible music, vibrant culture, and fun-filled festivities for what is certain to be another great edition next year.

Community spirit and athletic determination took centre stage in San Pedro del Pinatar as more than 800 participants laced up their running shoes for the incredible third edition of the AFEMAR Solidarity RunRún. Held on the municipality’s vibrant coastal streets, this hugely popular charity race brought together local residents, seasoned athletes, and mental health advocates in a powerful display of solidarity, camaraderie and community support.

Thrilling victories in the male and female divisions

The competition saw impressive performances across both of its divisions. In the male category, José Vicente González Arteaga crossed the finish line first with a time of 21 minutes and 4 seconds. He was closely followed by runner-up José Moreno González, while local favourite Francisco Mariano Martínez Morales, affectionately known as “Kiko”, secured a third-place podium spot for his home town.

In the female category, Esther Bódalo Lozano delivered a dominant performance to claim victory, stopping the clock at an impressive 27 minutes and 29 seconds. Caroline Brown finished in second place, while Gladys Cecilia Artiaga Londa completed the women’s podium in third position after a tough competition.

Raising vital funds for housing and youth mental health

However, the true triumph of the day was in the event’s charitable heart. All of the funds raised through registrations and community donations directly went towards AFEMAR’s ongoing social initiatives. Specifically, the proceeds will finance two vital projects: establishing a new sheltered housing facility to empower individuals living with mental health conditions, and expanding “L-mental,” a specialised support service dedicated to providing care for children and adolescents navigating mental health challenges.

A cherished community tradition driving real change

Organisers expressed deep gratitude to the hundreds of runners, dedicated volunteers, municipal leaders, and enthusiastic supporters who filled the streets with boundless energy and optimism. Combining athletics with social purpose, the RunRún event has firmly established itself as a cherished tradition in San Pedro del Pinatar, proving that when a community runs together, every step creates real, lasting, and positive change for mental health care awareness across the municipality.

History enthusiasts, local residents, and curious visitors have the extraordinary opportunity to step back in time at the beginning of October: the ancient archaeological site of La Bastida, just outside the Murcian town of Totana, is opening its gates to the public for its highly anticipated annual open days on Saturday, October 3 and Sunday, October 4.

Uncovering Europe’s ‘Troy of the West’: a weekend of history in the interior of Murcia

Dating back more than 4,200 years, La Bastida was once a dominant urban centre of the Bronze Age El Argar culture. The site is often referred to as “The Troy of the West” and is renowned among international historians and archaeologists for its remarkably advanced engineering and sophisticated fortresses. Its massive stone walls, defensive towers, and intricate town planning continue to fascinate researchers even in the modern day, especially due to the precise origins of the Argaric civilisation’s building techniques, which remain one of Europe’s greatest ancient mysteries.

Interactive workshops and guided tours

The scheduled open days will provide a rare and immersive glimpse into this fascinating prehistoric society. The mornings will feature guided walking tours that bring the ancient ruins and original stone structures to life. Visitors can discover how early inhabitants lived, farmed, and crafted tools thousands of years ago. The programme will include hands-on pottery workshops, engaging activities for children, and public access to the active archaeological laboratory where specialists analyse excavated artifacts.

Visitor information and booking details: how to register for guided tours and exploration of the site

The site will welcome visitors on both Saturday and Sunday morning from 9:00am to 12:00pm. Tour groups will be capped at 30 participants each, so interested visitors and history buffs are recommended to book their day in advance.

Booking is open through the Totana Tourist Office via telephone at T. 968 41 81 53, or by email at turismo@totana.es. Whether you are a devoted history enthusiast or simply seeking an enriching weekend excursion, La Bastida will offer an unforgettable journey into Iberian history.
