The Andalucía Roads Packed With Speed Cameras

You’ve just landed at Málaga Airport, collected the hire car and loaded the suitcases into the boot. The sat nav says Marbella is less than an hour away, the holiday playlist is on and, at last, your break in southern Spain has begun.
Then comes the first speed camera sign. A few kilometres later, another one appears. And then another.
If it feels as though there are speed cameras everywhere in Andalucía, you’re not imagining it. The region has more speed cameras than any other in Spain, and with millions of holidaymakers expected to hit the roads over the coming weeks, the chances of passing one are higher here than almost anywhere else in the country.
For visitors, it’s not about driving nervously or spending the whole journey staring at the speedometer. It’s about understanding where cameras are most common and why so many drivers receive fines after what they thought was a perfectly normal holiday.
Why Andalucía has become Spain’s speed camera hotspot
Summer transforms Andalucía’s roads.
The motorways leading to the Costa del Sol fill with tourists heading to beach resorts, while inland routes become busier with people exploring white villages, natural parks and historic cities such as Granada, Córdoba and Seville.
That huge increase in traffic is one reason Spain’s Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) pays close attention to the region.
According to the latest figures, Andalucía has 430 speed cameras, the highest total of any autonomous community. They include fixed cameras, average speed cameras and mobile enforcement points spread across all eight provinces.
Across Spain as a whole, there are around 2,200 speed cameras, including 1,310 mobile cameras, 706 fixed cameras and 184 average speed cameras. Almost one in every five is located in Andalucía.
That doesn’t mean every road is packed with cameras, but it does mean drivers are more likely to encounter one during a typical holiday journey than they might expect.
The roads where holidaymakers are most likely to see cameras
If you’re flying into Málaga, chances are your first drive will be along the A-7 Mediterranean motorway. It’s one of the busiest routes on Spain’s southern coast, linking Málaga with resorts including Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Marbella, Estepona and beyond.
Not surprisingly, it’s also one of the corridors where fixed and average speed cameras feature prominently.
The A-45, which connects Málaga with Córdoba, is another route with several enforcement points, while the A-92, stretching across much of Andalucía, is regularly used by drivers travelling between Málaga, Granada, Seville and Almería.
But it’s not only the major motorways that deserve attention.
Many visitors assume that once they leave the motorway, they’re unlikely to come across speed enforcement. In reality, the DGT also deploys mobile cameras on secondary roads, particularly those leading to popular tourist destinations and rural areas where speed limits can change frequently.
That means a scenic drive through the mountains or a shortcut to a hidden beach can be just as closely monitored as a busy dual carriageway.
The provinces with the highest number of speed cameras are Seville and Cádiz, both with 68, followed by Málaga with 59, Jaén with 50, Granada with 49, Huelva with 46, and Córdoba and Almería, each with 45.
For holidaymakers touring several provinces in one trip, encountering multiple enforcement zones is perfectly normal.
The mistakes visitors make most often
Many speeding fines aren’t the result of drivers racing along motorways. Instead, they happen because visitors simply aren’t familiar with Spanish roads.
Speed limits can change quickly as you approach towns, roundabouts or roadworks. It’s easy to continue at motorway speed for a few extra seconds without noticing the new limit.
Another common mistake is assuming that if there’s no fixed camera visible, there’s nothing to worry about.
Mobile cameras don’t work like that.
Unlike fixed installations, they can operate along long stretches of road identified by the DGT, making them much harder to predict.
Drivers also tend to relax once they’re close to their accommodation. After a long flight, it’s tempting to focus on finding the hotel or holiday apartment rather than watching every speed sign.
Ironically, that’s often when concentration drops.
How to avoid an expensive reminder after your holiday
Nobody wants to return home only to discover a speeding fine waiting weeks later.
If you’re driving a rental car, remember that fines don’t disappear because you’ve flown back to the UK or another country. Hire companies can identify who was driving at the time and may also charge an administration fee for handling the paperwork.
The easiest way to avoid problems is surprisingly simple.
Treat every change in the speed limit as significant, even if the difference seems small. Pay attention when leaving motorways, entering built up areas or driving on unfamiliar rural roads, where limits often change more frequently than visitors expect.
Using a sat nav can also help you stay aware of changing speed limits, but roadside signs always take priority.
Spain’s traffic authority says speed cameras are intended to improve road safety rather than catch unsuspecting tourists. Whether you’re spending a week on the Costa del Sol, exploring Andalucía’s national parks or driving between its historic cities, the best holiday memories are unlikely to involve opening a letter from a car hire company a month after you’ve unpacked.
A little extra attention behind the wheel can make sure the only thing you bring home from Andalucía is a camera roll full of sunshine, not a speeding penalty.

Estepona has become the centre of happy celebration after a ONCE lottery coupon sold in the town scooped a whopping €500,000 prize. Dedicated ONCE seller Rosario Tornay sold the winning ticket, purchased via card terminal, from her stand on Avenida Juan Carlos, where she has worked since 2018. The coupon left Tornay’s hands, unaware of who actually holds it and leaving her desperate to know who has scooped the wonderful life-changing prize.
All five digits plus the series number
Thursday’s draw, held on Thursday, July 2 featured Soria’s historic Alameda de Cervantes park as its themed design. ONCE dedicates each daily coupon to a different Spanish landmark, town or cultural site. The luck filled day rewarded the ticket-holder for not only matching all five digits but also the series number, boosting the payout to the maximum amount of €500,000.
Seller overwhelmed by big win
“I thought last night the number looked familiar, but I never imagined it could actually win,” Tornay admitted, still struggling to take in the news. “I still can’t quite believe it, I need to find out who’s won.”
Describing her connection with regular customers, she said the win feels personal. “People are part of my daily life, that’s what this job is about. So when one of them wins, you really feel it as your own.” She added that she’s looking forward to celebrating with the winner once they come forward.
Local residents react on Facebook
News of the win prompted a flurry of comments on ONCE Andalucia’s Facebook page. One local wished Tornay well, writing: “Congratulations to the lucky winner, keep the streak going and hand out plenty more prizes, let’s see if the rest of us get lucky too.”
Another commenter, praised Tornay’s role in the win: “Luck smiles on those who work for it, and in this case ONCE has rewarded your good work. I hope they remember you, since you’re the one who brought them the luck.”
Other prizes land across Andalucia and the Canary Islands
Thursday’s draw did not stop there, further rewards of €35,000 were distributed in Huelva, Siles and Fuengirola, with remaining prizes going to winners in the Canary Islands.
ONCE has reiterated that its lottery products form part of a responsible gaming scheme, incorporating safeguards from design through to sale, including a strict ban on selling tickets to minors and on credit-based purchases.
Farmers and food producers in Alhaurin el Grande and Coin have officially launched the historic 2026 harvest of the region’s most famous gourmet vegetable. The Tomate Huevo Toro. Recent rainfall has finally brought an end to a punishing dry spell across the Guadalhorce Valley, clearing the way for an incredible 1.5 million kilograms of this luxury crop to hit local markets this summer.
Known affectionately to locals as the “King of the Orchard,” a variety of heirloom tomato is massive in size, has a rich meaty texture, and rugged, heart-like shape appearance.
A bumper crop for Andalucian farmers
Growers estimate that roughly 230,000 individual plants have been cultivated across traditional bancales, the stepped, terraced plots carved into the regional hillsides.
The official summer campaign kicked off with a special tour of a heritage orchard in Alhaurin el Grande, where town mayor Anthony Bermudez praised local families for safeguarding the traditional agricultural landscape. This heritage farming method relies entirely on a labour-intensive encañado system, where farmers hand-build structures out of wild river reeds to support the immense weight of the plants. Even though the outdoor weather conditions mean the harvest is arriving slightly later than usual, agricultural experts confirm the quality is exceptional, reinforcing its reputation as one of the most exclusive tomato varieties in the world.
Creative cold soups celebrate the launch
Following the farm tour in Alhaurin el Grande, the foody festivities moved over to the neighbouring Coin Agro-food Market. Top local chefs gathered to showcase diverse interpretations of gazpacho. Dishes ranged from a rustic, hand-crushed gazpacho majao blended with fresh seasonal fruit, to more modern, contemporary variations using strawberries and local goat’s cheese.
Another traditional favourite was porra, a much thicker, creamier cousin of gazpacho originating from nearby Antequera. Unlike drinkable gazpacho, porra is a dense puree created by pounding sourdough bread, fresh garlic, and extra virgin olive oil together, which is eaten with a spoon and typically garnished with hard-boiled egg and cured Spanish ham.
Summer events for food lovers
More than 2,000 local families depend heavily on this single seasonal harvest, which proudly carries the Sabor a Malaga (Taste of Malaga) regional quality brand. International residents and visiting food lovers can follow a month-long gastronomic restaurant route running across the province from July 31 to August 31.
Key dates for tomato fan’s diaries include a cultural evening on July 23 at the Antonio Gala House Museum in Alhaurin el Grande, followed by a charity golf tournament at Alhaurin Golf on the final Saturday of July. The seasonal festivities will conclude in Coin with the Verbena Tomatera, open-air summer street festival on August 13 and 14, and then the cherry on the cake, the famous annual tomato auction on August 15 in the town’s Parque de San Agustin, where last year’s event saw a small box of tomatoes sold for a record €18,000.
Rail passengers who fancy a change of scenery for the weekend away from the Costa del Sol with minimal hassle, can now travel direct between Malaga and Barcelona without the need to change trains in a new seasonal service for the summer with Ouigo.
New weekend route for summer 2026
This direct connection has limitations and operates only on Friday through to Monday between July 20 and September 6, with a few additional exceptions on July 24, 26 and 31 July and August 2. Tickets for the route are already available through Ouigo’s official website and app.
Newly released journeys will take just under seven hours, calling at Zaragoza, Madrid and Cordoba along the way. Northbound trains depart Barcelona-Sants at 7:35am, reaching Zaragoza at 9:07am, Madrid at 11:05am, Cordoba at 1:25pm and Malaga at 2:31pm. With southbound services leaving Malaga at 4:50pm, arriving in Cordoba at 5:44pm, Madrid at 7:42pm, Zaragoza at 9:47pm and finally Barcelona at 11:56pm.
Responding to high demand for the Costa del Sol traveller
Growing summer demand for southern Spain has driven the expansion, which follows the full reopening of rail infrastructure in Andalucia. Rail operator Renfe already runs year-round direct services on this same corridor, so Ouigo’s move brings fresh competition to a popular route.
Four years of growth in Spain
Since entering the Spanish market in 2021, Ouigo has carried more than 23 million passengers and invested over €700 million, now employing more than 460 permanent staff and running 16 trains across 15 destinations.
Research from consultancy Afi credits Ouigo’s arrival with cutting average ticket prices by a huge 40%, opening up high-speed rail to travellers who previously said they found it unaffordable. One in four Ouigo passengers had never used high-speed rail before the company launched, and 85% say they now travel more often since competition arrived on Spain’s railways.
