Fashion, entertainment and community spirit will come together on Tuesday 14th July as residents and visitors are invited to attend a special Fashion Show Fundraiser in aid of the Arboleas Food Bank. Taking place at Cortijo La Cueva from 5pm onwards, this promises to be a relaxed and enjoyable summer evening while raising valuable funds and collecting much-needed food donations for local families.

For just €5 per person, guests will receive a welcoming glass of cava on arrival as well as a spot prize number, giving everyone the chance to win throughout the evening.

The fashion show will feature an impressive selection of ladies’ and men’s clothing, alongside jewellery, accessories and stylish footwear, offering plenty of inspiration for anyone looking to refresh their wardrobe.

Adding to the excitement will be a raffle, tombola and a variety of spot prizes, ensuring there is something happening throughout the evening. Drinks and snacks will also be available to purchase from the bar, although guests are reminded that this will be cash only.

One of the most charming, child friendly traditions returns to Garrucha this summer. On July 15, Garrucha will mark the start of local festivities with the children’s Belt Race on Bicycle, drawing crowds of eager competitors and enthusiastic supporters.

A traditional Spanish ribbon race with a local twist

The carrera de cintas, or ribbon race, is a long-standing tradition across Spain wherein ribbons are suspended from a line, and participants attempt to catch them while passing underneath. Typically, riders would take part on horseback, but in Garrucha the youngest competitors swap saddles for bicycles, making the event both accessible and great fun.

The bicycle version of the event has become a much-loved part of the town’s annual celebrations, giving children the opportunity to take part in a tradition that has been enjoyed for generations. It combines skill, balance and a little luck, while providing plenty of entertainment for families and spectators lining the route.

The tradition behind the ribbons

The ribbon themselves are an important part of the custom. It is tradition for girls to decorate the ribbon with their name before the event. If a boy successfully captures it, both the boy and the girl exchange a small gift as a keepsake of the occasion.

Although customs have evolved over the years, the exchange of ribbons remains one of the most distinctive and symbolic elements of the carrera de cintas, helping to preserve a tradition that continues to be passed down through generations in towns across Spain.

Childrens bicycle procession through Garrucha

The evening begins at 8pm outside the Town Hall, where young cyclists aged between four and 12 will set off accompanied by the Ex Mari Orta Municipal Band. The procession will make its way through the town to El Pósito, arriving at around 8.30pm, where the highly anticipated ribbon race will begin.

The colourful parade, complete with music from the municipal band, is expected to attract plenty of local residents and visitors, creating a lively atmosphere as Garrucha officially launches its summer festivities.

Registration is open at Garrucha Town Hall from 1 to 10 July. Families are encouraged to sign up early and enjoy an evening celebrating local tradition, community spirit and the official beginning of the town’s summer festivities.
