This August, the picturesque streets of Benitachell will become an open-air cultural stage for the second edition of the Literary Festival “Literatura a la Fresca”. The festival, which is organised by the Town Council’s Departments of Culture and Equality alongside the feminist cultural association Clásicas y Modernas, will run from Wednesday, August 12 to Friday, August 28, bringing literature, visual art, and local history out into the warm Mediterranean summer nights in this charming coastal town.

Outdoor art exhibition honours resilience and survival in disastrous Valencian floods

One of the central highlights of this year’s festival is the “Art al Carrer” (Art in the Street) show, an outdoor exhibition featuring 101 feminist artworks hung from the balconies along Avenida de Alicante, Carrer La Pau, and Carrer Major. The exhibition will officially open on Thursday, August 13, at 7:00 pm with an inaugural walk from the local primary school to the Town Hall.

The display carries profound emotional significance, as the artwork, provided by the Associació de Dones de Picanya, survived the catastrophic DANA floods of October 2024. The pieces will be exhibited with visible marks of water and mud, the canvases standing as symbols of resilience, artistic survival, and solidarity across the Valencian community. Featured creators include local and international artists such as Inma Liñana, Visa Proming, África Abril, Maria Escalona, Loles Grau, and Giacomo Pennichi, the painter behind the vibrant mural on Benitachell’s Municipal Library façade.

Author debates and tributes to Valencian heritage

The festival also offers a dynamic programme that will appeal to residents and visitors of all ages. The 2026 edition pays special tribute to author Francesc Almela i Vives, designated Writer of the Year 2026 by the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua. Literary roundtables will bring together leading authors from the Marina Alta region to debate storycraft, coastal culture, and regional identity, including “When Our Marina Becomes High Literature” moderated by writer Jovi Lozano.

Evening recitals and family workshops bring streets to life

Finally, evening poetry recitals, children’s book workshops, storytelling sessions, and interactive games will keep the town alight with activity during the event. With this festival, Benitachell will merge community heritage with contemporary artistic expression. Whether strolling beneath the decorated balconies or listening to local authors under the stars, visitors of every age and ethnicity will find a vibrant celebration of literature, recovery, and small town life in mid and late August.
