Work is restarting on a major infrastructure project in Benidorm this week, with crews returning to Avenida Montecarlo after a two-month summer break.

The €1.35 million scheme is set to transform almost 400 metres of the road in the upper Rincón de Loix area, with the council aiming to have the project fully completed before the end of 2026.

Work resumes after summer

The works will officially restart on Tuesday, September 1, after construction was paused during July and August to allow the avenue to remain open during the busy summer season.

The road was reopened to traffic in early July once the final paving had been completed on the section between Calle Londres and Calle Berlín.

Now the remaining infrastructure work can get underway again, with the project picking up where it left off.

The scheme is a continuation of an earlier section of improvements between Calle París and Calle Roma, completed more than a year ago.

What is changing?

The project goes far beyond resurfacing the road.

One of the biggest changes will be the replacement of more than 700 metres of ageing fibrocement water pipes with new cast-iron infrastructure. The existing sewer system will also be upgraded, with almost 339 metres of concrete pipe being replaced.

A completely new stormwater drainage network will also be installed. Until now, this section of the avenue did not have a dedicated rainwater system.

The new network will include 75 drainage inlets and more than 500 metres of pipework, designed to improve the way heavy rainfall is dealt with.

New lighting, trees and accessible pavements

The improvements will also be visible above ground.

Benidorm is installing a recycled water network that can be used for street trees and potentially by residential communities to irrigate gardens and green areas.

Public lighting will be upgraded, while the existing trees will be replaced with slow-growing evergreen species.

The pavements will also be redesigned with universal accessibility and road-safety measures.

A long-awaited upgrade

According to the council, the project is particularly challenging because of the rocky ground beneath the avenue, which has increased both the complexity and cost of the work.

Officials say the upgrade is needed after around four decades without major intervention in the area.

Once completed, the council expects fewer leaks and water losses, improved drainage and lighting, better accessibility and a more modern public space for residents.

The project is being funded entirely through Benidorm’s Municipal Water Service Renewal Funds.

In addition to this performance, the nostalgia will continue into the following evening, Sunday, September 20, as the spotlight shifts to honour another titan of Spanish balladry, Camilo Sesto. Known for his dramatic range and chart-topping hits like “Vivir Así Es Morir de Amor” and “Algo de Mí,” the second night, also performed by Sebastián Cuenca, promises an equally impressive retrospective of Sesto’s historic career.

All proceeds from the night will go towards raising vital funds to support local neighbours battling cancer, as well as their families. The association frequently participates in local events, and recently participated in World Cancer Day with a workshop designed for awareness, solidarity, and support for local residents and visitors.

Drivers in Teulada-Moraira will need to adjust to new regulated parking hours as the town switches from its peak summer timetable to its autumn schedule.

The updated hours will remain in place until October 31, affecting motorists using the municipality’s blue zone parking areas. While the payment system and tariffs remain unchanged, the operating times will be reduced following the busy summer season.

What changes from September?

From September 1, regulated parking will operate on weekdays between 9am and 2pm, before restarting from 4pm until 8pm.

On Saturdays, parking restrictions will only apply during the morning, from 9am to 2pm. Sundays and public holidays will continue to offer free parking, with no regulated service in operation.

The revised timetable replaces the extended summer hours that ran throughout July and August, when parking controls remained active continuously throughout the day to cope with increased visitor numbers.

Parking prices stay the same

Although the timetable is changing, parking charges remain exactly as before. Different rates continue to apply for residents and non-residents, with residents benefiting from reduced fees.

The council says the regulated parking system is designed to improve the turnover of parking spaces in the busiest commercial and coastal areas, making it easier for shoppers, visitors and residents to find available spaces.

Free parking remains available

Drivers who prefer not to use the regulated parking zones can still take advantage of several free public car parks across the municipality.

Among the main alternatives are the VI Centenari public car park in Teulada and the Les Sorts public car park in Moraira, both of which provide free parking within easy walking distance of the town centres.

The council encourages motorists to check the updated timetable before parking to avoid unnecessary fines as the seasonal change comes into effect.

The autumn schedule will remain in force until the end of October, when winter parking hours are expected to begin.
