If London Stansted is your gateway to Spain this summer, your journey could soon become a lot less stressful. Thousands of passengers travelling between the UK and popular Spanish destinations are able to benefit from two major developments designed to improve the airport experience both before take-off and after landing.

London Stansted expansion changes for passengers

Upgraded security technology, refurbished gate areas and sustainability projects are already under way making the passenger experience much more pleasant, with the enlarged terminal, expanded departure lounge and new passenger facilities due to be delivered as construction progresses. Work continues on the airport’s landmark terminal extension as part of a huge £1.1 billion expansion plans.

Overnight Stansted Express trial for early departures or late arrivals

Passengers also now have another way of travelling to and from Stansted. Until 25 September 2026, Greater Anglia is running overnight Stansted Express services every Friday night into Saturday morning. Trains operate roughly every 30 minutes between Stansted Airport and Tottenham Hale, where passengers can connect with London’s Night Tube, an additional 18 services have been added to the timetable in a trial designed to support demand during the busy summer travel season. Passenger numbers will determine whether the service becomes permanent.

What the London Stansted changes mean for Spain travellers this summer

The new overnight rail service is likely to be the biggest immediate benefit for passengers flying between London Stansted and Spain. Those arriving on late-night flights from destinations such as Malaga, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Barcelona or Tenerife will have more public transport options into London, with early Saturday departures becoming easier to reach without relying on airport hotels or expensive taxi journeys.

The airport’s wider expansion is also beginning to benefit travellers. Upgraded security technology and refurbished passenger facilities are already improving the airport experience, while work continues on a larger terminal extension that will provide more space, additional seating, new food and drink outlets and improved passenger facilities in the years ahead.

Questions answered

What changes are planned as part of the London Stansted expansion?

The project includes a larger terminal building, improved security and baggage facilities, additional aircraft stands, upgraded passenger areas and better transport connections. Together, these improvements are intended to increase capacity and make journeys through the airport more efficient.

Do I need to book the overnight Stansted Express in advance?

No. Standard Stansted Express tickets are valid on the overnight services, although booking ahead can often reduce the fare. As with all rail travel, passengers should check the latest timetable before travelling.

Will the overnight train service continue after summer?

That has not yet been decided. Greater Anglia says the success of the summer trial will determine whether overnight Stansted Express services become a permanent part of the timetable.
