Costa del Sol

The July night on the Costa del Sol that belongs to its fishermen

Published

on

Villas and beach clubs that have transformed the coastline may come and go, but every July, fishermen still carry their patron saint into the sea, exactly as their grandfathers did in the one tradition that isn’t going anywhere.

Why the Virgen del Carmen still to this day stops people in their tracks

Every summer, something happens on the Costa del Sol that no beach club or luxury development can touch. Fishermen shoulder a statue of the Virgen del Carmen through packed streets and carry her into the sea, while residents line the front to watch. Held around July 16 each year, the festival honours Our Lady of Mount Carmel and ranks among the region’s most important religious celebrations, marking her as patron saint of fishermen and seafarers. Numerous processions take place stretching from Torremolinos and Benalmadena through to Fuengirola, Marbella, Estepona and Manilva.

A patron saint carried by the people

The Virgen del Carmen isn’t a spectacle dressed up for visitors, it is a fishermen’s festival, organised by the local fishermen’s guilds, or cofradias. Each town adds its own style. In Los Boliches, part of Fuengirola, a centuries-old tradition has fishermen carry the Virgin directly into the water on their shoulders, with no boat involved at all. Elsewhere, statues are carried through the streets before being taken out to sea aboard the fishing boats.

Why the sea procession is still important to fishing families

For communities whose ancestors depended entirely on the Mediterranean for their living, the maritime procession is an act of gratitude and protection. Known as “La Reina de los Mares” (Queen of the Seas), the Virgen del Carmen holds a place in their identity as a direct line to generations who trusted the Virgin to bring them home safely.

A tradition holding its own against mass tourism

The area has changed almost beyond recognition since fishing villages gave way to resorts, marinas and luxury developments, a movement that shows little sign of slowing. Over tourism can drive the erosion of local cultural identity, changing the meaning of a place rather than simply occupying its space. In Spain that tension is visible in daily life, with residents voicing growing frustration as historic neighbourhoods are hollowed out and converted for short-term lets aimed squarely at visitors rather than the people who grew up there.

Virgen del Carmen is one of those special nights of the year when local towns visibly celebrate the traditions special to them, a moment where the fishing families who built these places, not the developers who reshaped them, take the spotlight. There is no ticket, no marketing campaign and no fake curated Instagram moment behind it; it survives simply because residents choose, year after year, to keep showing up for it.

Cranes may keep rising and stylish new bars and restaurants opening, but for one week each July the Costa del Sol has at its core, a true traditional festival celebrating who it really is.

Wildfire sparks major panic in Alhaurin el Grande as second helicopter deployed near stables and motorhomes

A rapidly developing wildfire emergency is unfolding in Alhaurin el Grande, with what appears to be two separate fire fronts burning in the area around the Rio Fahala. Emergency services remain on scene as firefighters, supported by helicopters and specialist wildfire crews, work to contain the blazes before they can spread further.

Two fires reported near Rio Fahala

According to EWN eyewitnesses at the scene, one fire is producing white smoke in the area of the bullrushes along the Rio Fahala. Witnesses say the scary sound of distressed horses can be heard from nearby stables as the fire burns close to the area.

A second fire is producing thick black smoke closer to the Posh Pets dog and cat hotel where the smoke appears to be coming from what looks like a car or caravan on fire, although this has not been officially confirmed. All at Posh Pets have reported that the dog hotel is fine.

The second fire is reported to be only approximately a hundred metres from Posh Pets, prompting major concern among local residents for the dogs and cats at the boarding kennels and cattery. At the time of writing, there have been no reports that the facility itself has been affected.

Second helicopter and BRICA crews respond

Firefighters continue to battle the blaze on the ground, with a BRICA fire engine among the emergency vehicles at the scene. A second helicopter also arrived to assist crews as they work to contain the fire. Witnesses describe hearing loud crackling noises as the fire burns through the dry vegetation.

Residents work together as fire spreads

Local people have been seen rallying together in an effort to protect their land while firefighters tackle the blaze. Several motorhomes in the area have also become a concern, with people moving their motorhomes away from the fire as a precaution.

Neighbours fear for nearby stables

The situation has become increasingly emotional with the unbearable sounds of distressed horses. Neighbours are seen crying out of concerns for the animals in the stables as firefighters continued their efforts to limit the damaged and control the situation.

This is a developing story, and more information will be published as it becomes available.

Coin installs smart cameras in fight against fly-tipping and vandalism

Coin has decided to get tough on fly-tipping with an extensive network of surveillance cameras to sort out their problem of illegal waste dumping, vandalism, and antisocial behaviour across the town. Coin local police and the council have announced the deployment of more than a dozen devices in strategic positions as part of efforts to better public safety and traffic management while encouraging responsible community habits.

Initial installations target problem locations

Work has started with a pilot scheme in Valdeperales before spreading to additional sites. Cameras now monitor areas including La Trocha, La Charca, the vicinity of El Rodeo sports centre, Alberquillas, Rincón, La Fuente, Cortijo Benítez, sections of the industrial estate, and roads such as Matadero and Antequera. Other units cover the Mijas road near La Fuente and Urique-El Rincon.

This first phase focuses on recycling points, rural entrances, and urban container zones where unauthorised deposits frequently occur. Teams will bring all twelve units online gradually over coming weeks.

Licence plate recognition behind enforcement

Equipment features advanced automatic number plate recognition together with artificial intelligence capabilities. Such technology allows quick identification of vehicles involved in illegal dumping or damage to public facilities. Local police and national security services gain valuable support when responding to reported incidents through faster evidence collection.

Francisco Santos, the mayor explained how the system tackles security concerns, protects public health standards, and directs bulky waste to the proper recycling centre instead of streets or recycling bins.

Ongoing waste management challenges remain

Council services already run double-daily refuse collections, especially in rural districts, and maintain regular street cleaning, pressure washing, disinfection, and pest control programmes. Despite these measures, the problem has become endemic, especially at out of town sites with some individuals and businesses still dumping furniture, construction rubble, and other unsuitable materials beside containers. These actions create extra costs, environmental risks, potential for wildfires, and visual pollution that affects everyone.

Education campaign complements camera rollout

Authorities are preparing a detailed information guide for residents explaining acceptable items for each container type and the need to take larger waste to the official tip. This idea means to prevent problems through better understanding rather than relying solely on fines or penalties.

Camera footage will also help track damage to bins and surrounding equipment. Officials describe the project as a deterrent that supports the vast majority of citizens who follow the rules and dispose of waste correctly.

Guardia Civil haul in Mijas. Credit: GC

Guardia Civil officers in the Costa del Sol have dismantled an active, highly mobile criminal gang specialising in stealing valuable belongings from parked cars. Investigators arrested three gang members who allegedly targeted busy supermarket and shopping centre car parks across Malaga, Mijas, Marbella and Manilva. The police operation successfully put an end to a crime spree that had caused frustration and upset among local residents and tourists.

Victims regularly reported their vehicles had been raided without any physical signs of forced entry, despite being certain they had locked their doors correctly when they left them to go shopping. Officers from the Mijas Guardia Civil headquarters launched a detailed inquiry after noticing a sudden increase in theft reports in these specific shopping centre car parks.

Coordination and clever wrapping techniques

Gang members worked in a highly coordinated manner to access these unsuspecting targets. One individual would watch out for potential victims returning to their cars while a second accomplice used sophisticated electronic frequency jammers to block remote key signals, leaving the vehicles completely unlocked. This method allowed them to slip inside the cars without attracting attention.

Suspects then entered the unlocked cars, quickly stealing valuable items like laptops, tablets, mobile phones, sunglasses, luxury watches, and designer handbags. They tried to avoid detection by wrapping these stolen electronic items in kitchen aluminium foil before sending them away using standard postal courier services. This foil wrapping was intended to block GPS tracking signals.

Recovered items returned to rightful owners

Police tracking efforts eventually led to the successful identification and arrest of all three suspects. Investigators have now charged the trio with seven counts of theft, membership of an organised criminal group, and forging official documents.

Officers recovered numerous stolen electronics, luxury watches, and designer handbags during the raid, which have now been returned to their original owners. This successful police action has put an end to an incredibly elusive and technologically advanced theft ring.
