HR-V e:HEV – impressively Honda

Published

on

Honda have a well-deserved reputation for quality and reliability and it’s not only their latest models either, with older Hondas regularly featuring highly in used car surveys. They may, arguably, not be the most exciting cars but many people, even if they have their exciting sports models, often need a comfortable and reliable car for every day, practical use. Hondas fit the bill perfectly!

The HR-V e:HEV is the company’s small SUV that combines both petrol and electric to produce an eminently useable car that combines the best of electric with the, at the moment, more practical petrol power. The combination works well to both reduce emissions and increase MPG without the need for stopping and plugging in to charge.

Prices start at €37,738/£32,725 and peak at €45,430/£39,395 with five trim levels and a generous standard equipment list across the range. All models come with wireless CarPlay, heated front seats, navigation, front and rear parking sensors, rear view camera, rear privacy glass, keyless entry and start, adaptive cruise control and three drive modes.

One engine choice provides the power for all models in the range, a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol unit aligned to not one but two electric motors for a combined 131PS. The e:CVT automatic gearbox is probably the only thing that merits any complaint about the HR-V. It’s a characteristic with all these units, not just on Hondas, that when you accelerate hard, the engine will instantly rise to high revs and stay there while the speed catches up. This creates a constant “droning” noise, which is almost unpleasantly noisy under hard acceleration, smooth and progressive acceleration is key to restoring the normal Honda refinement. It’s a knack of driving that is easily mastered and makes life more aurally pleasant. The redeeming feature of the gearbox, in this old-fashioned writer’s view, is the fact it has a proper gearshift lever!

On the road the HR-V is impressively refined (gearbox issues apart) and smooth as one would expect from Honda, there are no rattles or flimsiness and the interior is a delight, feeling suitably premium.  The ride quality is excellent, soaking up the bumps and potholes well, and considering it’s not the kind of car built for enthusiastic point-to-point drives across country the handling is very good too.

In short, if you need a premium, comfortable, well equipped and comfortable car that’s practical for any and every kind of use, the HR-V is quite possibly the one that will tick all your motoring boxes.

Marbella moments worth showing up for

Marbella moments. Credit: Nicole King

I’m not much for networking events and never have been, even before becoming a member of the press. I’m not big on self-promotion nor chitchat and so nowadays if I attend such a happening, its usually in support of someone I care about or a good cause or because I admire their work ethic, or it’s going to be fun!

Such is the case with tastings organised by Pilar Candil and her husband. Their business promotes restaurants in particular and they kindly invite local media to different venues in Marbella so that we know they exist and have something exciting to offer. I love going to these gatherings, mainly because I get to catch up with other members of our local media, of all nationalities. The conversation is varied as they’re not trying to get on the telly and there’s usually loads of delicious food; no one’s fighting over a canapé and so an ideal opportunity to really relax and enjoy the moment.

Just this week I’ve met up with “the gang” twice, firstly at Tony’s, the “new” beach restaurant in East Marbella. Tony’s Beach was founded in 1995 by Paula de la Calle García, a woman obviously of great vision and determination, who built a beach bar from scratch and turned it into an authentic landmark on the Marbella beachfront. Now it’s become another woman’s vision, Paula Sánchez de la Calle, her daughter, taking the family business into the next adventure. Together with executive chef Ivo Wakar she also has great plans.

I do so love a family business, particularly the ones that have been here since the beginning and have grown up with our city. We wish you all the best!

JuniorGP World Championship: The race is on

For most young riders reaching the international stage takes years. For Josh Wood it’s happening almost overnight, but not without challenges on and off the track.  In his mission to compete in the JuniorGP World Championship, with the first race in May, Josh needs around 85,000 euros.

This 17 year old from Fuengirola only took to motorbike racing last year but has already earned recognition, a place in the SPN Academy, competed in endurance races across Spain and been selected for the Red Bull Rookies programme.  This already puts him among the most promising up-coming young riders.

Behind the scenes, the reality is relentless, long days, limited resources and a constant search for funding in one of the most expensive sports in the world.  This is where we come in; the local international community.  Together we can hopefully help Josh raise the funds he needs and support him in this adventure.  Perhaps there’s even a sponsor or two amongst you who would welcome the opportunity to accompany him on his journey.

Last week, Josh joined me at RTV Marbella on English Edition and faced the camera alone for our chat. He admitted it felt more intimidating than racing, but he handled it like a champ.  I invite you to watch the interview so you can “meet” Josh, I know that once you do he’ll win you over too. (English Edition 18.04.26).

His mother Maiteland stands firmly by his side, supporting her son’s passion and ready to make whatever sacrifices are needed to help him keep moving forward.  Let’s do this! #bettertogether – Donations can be made through his GoFundMe page and his progress can be followed on Instagram @Josh.Wood36.
