An Irish man has died in Madrid after being struck by a taxi in the early hours of Sunday morning, with Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs now assisting his family following the tragedy in the Spanish capital.

A taxi hit him just after 2am on Ronda de Toledo

A 52-year-old Irish man has died in Madrid after being hit by a taxi in the early hours of Sunday October 4. The crash happened at around 2.20am on Ronda de Toledo, in the Arganzuela district just south of the city centre. Police officers who arrived first found him in cardiac arrest and began resuscitating him, with SAMUR (Madrid’s emergency medical service) then taking him to Hospital Clínico San Carlos.

However, despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. Madrid’s emergency services said paramedics had been called to help a 52-year-old man in cardiac arrest after he was hit by a taxi.

What Spanish police have said so far

Witnesses told police the man crossed the road away from a pedestrian crossing, according to Gaceta del Taxi, and the Municipal Police report reportedly puts the crash down to that. The taxi had two passengers on board at the time. The driver took a breathalyser test, which came back negative, and was identified at the scene but wasn’t arrested. Police are now sending their findings to a local court, which will review the case.

Nothing is confirmed about where he lived

So far there’s been no official confirmation of whether the man lived in Madrid or was visiting the city. The circumstances of the crash are still being pieced together, and the full picture is likely to emerge only once the court has seen the police report.

Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs is supporting his family

Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs said it’s aware of the case and is providing consular assistance (practical support from embassy staff) to his family. That kind of help is a big part of the department’s work. Its latest figures show 444 deaths abroad in 2025, the highest number in the statistics it publishes, within 1,981 consular cases overall.

Irish citizens in Spain who need urgent help can contact the Irish Embassy in Madrid or the department’s Consular Assistance Unit on +353 1 408 2527.

So for now the family are waiting on the court. Until it has reviewed the police report, the full circumstances of the crash won’t be confirmed.

Alcúdia Brings Its Historic Sa Fira To A Close

Alcúdia has brought this year’s Sa Fira to a lively close after three days of activities celebrating the Mallorcan town’s history, traditions, rural heritage and community spirit.

The final day once again transformed the streets into a meeting point for residents and visitors, with a packed programme offering something for all ages. From traditional giants and agricultural displays to animals, Roman re-enactments and children’s activities, the Sunday programme continued the festive atmosphere that had filled Alcúdia throughout the weekend.

A celebration of Alcúdia’s heritage

The annual Fira is much more than a street festival, with the event providing an opportunity to showcase traditions and elements of local life that have shaped the community over generations.

The town’s famous gegants, or giant figures, were among the attractions featured during the celebrations, adding one of Mallorca’s best-known traditions to the programme.

The agricultural and rural elements of Sa Fira also highlighted Alcúdia’s connection to the countryside, while the Roman-themed activities offered visitors the chance to step back into the island’s ancient past.

For younger visitors, a selection of activities helped make the final day a family-friendly occasion, with children able to enjoy the festive atmosphere alongside the traditional displays and performances.

Across the three days, the event encouraged people to explore Alcúdia on foot, discover its heritage and enjoy the town’s streets, squares and historic surroundings.

Music brings the celebrations to an end

After three busy days, organisers chose music and traditional dancing as the perfect way to bring Sa Fira to a close.

Plaza Carles V became the centre of the final celebrations as crowds gathered for a ballada popular, a traditional community dance event featuring performances by Sarau Alcudienc, Càrritx and Música Nostra.

The evening provided a fitting finale to the festivities, bringing together generations of residents and visitors in one of Alcúdia’s most recognisable public spaces.

Traditional music and dancing have long played an important role in Mallorca’s cultural celebrations, and the final performance gave people the opportunity to enjoy these customs in a lively, communal setting.

The atmosphere marked a final chance for people to meet friends, spend time with family and enjoy the festival before the streets returned to normal.

‘The heart of Alcúdia’

The local council thanked everyone who took part in the three-day celebration, highlighting the role played by residents in making Sa Fira a success.

The message to the community was one of appreciation for everyone who had taken to the streets, participated in the activities and helped create the atmosphere throughout the weekend.

With its combination of heritage, farming traditions, entertainment, family activities, music and local culture, Sa Fira once again offered a snapshot of the character of Alcúdia.

The closing celebrations ended with a clear message from the organisers: Sa Fira is not simply an event held in Alcúdia, but a celebration shaped by the people who live there.

As the final music faded from Plaza Carles V, this year’s edition came to an end, leaving residents and visitors with three days of traditional entertainment, community celebrations and a chance to experience the historic town at its most festive.

Sabinillas Coffee Morning For Adana Dogs

Published

on

sabinillas-coffee-morning-for-adana-dogs

Few things beat a nice slice of carrot cake with a proper cup of coffee, and this month you can enjoy both while helping dogs who are still waiting for a home. Adana, the Estepona-based animal rescue charity, is hosting a coffee morning at Frankie’s Bar and Grill on the Paseo in Sabinillas on Friday, October 9, from 11am to 1pm.

What’s happening

Volunteers will serve fresh homemade cakes, with a variety of items like sponges topped with creamy icing to chocolate brownies and cupcakes. There will be plenty of coffee to go round to sit and chill, relax and have a friendly gossip, the sort of morning where you pop in for half an hour and end up staying for two.

Frankie’s has welcomed Adana supporters before, including many a previous coffee morning, so regulars will know what a warm welcome to expect. Newcomers to the coast are very welcome too. It is a lovely way to meet neighbours and put faces to the names behind a charity many expats already know well.

Why every slice matters

Adana has been rescuing animals since 1990, and it relies on donations and the efforts of volunteers rather than government funding. Vet bills, vaccinations, food and shelter upkeep add up quickly, particularly for dogs who arrive sick, injured or abandoned.

On October 9, all proceeds go to the welfare of the Adana dogs. That means your coffee and cake help pay for the everyday care that keeps them healthy and comfortable until the right family comes along.

Make it a morning out

Sabinillas is a pleasant spot for a stroll, so you could arrive early, walk along the seafront and settle in with a drink and a treat. Bring a friend, a neighbour or visiting family, and consider taking a few extra cakes home.

If you cannot make it, there are other ways to help. Adana runs a thrift shop in Estepona, and volunteers regularly staff an information stall at the Sunday market in Sabinillas, where you can ask about membership, donations or giving a dog a forever home. Opening times can change, so check Adana’s social media pages before you set out.

A small treat for yourself could make a real difference to a dog who has already waited long enough. Pop the date in your diary and come hungry.

There are some household accidents you would never expect to happen until they do. A shower is one of those everyday routines most of us take completely for granted, which makes the death of a 23-year-old woman in Antequera all the more difficult to take in. She suffered a fatal electric shock while using the shower on Monday afternoon, with police now investigating how an electrical current reached the shower head and whether a possible illegal connection at the property played any part in what happened.

Emergency call made from Antequera home

The emergency services were alerted at around 3.10pm on Monday, October 5, after a call was made to 112 Andalucía reporting that a woman was unconscious inside a bathroom at a property on Calle San Pedro, in area of Antequera, Málaga. The seriousness of the call brought several emergency services to the address. Policía Nacional, Policía Local and medical emergency teams attended the property, where they found the young woman unresponsive following what appeared to have been an electrical incident.

Medical staff attempted to save her, but she could not be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the reports of the incident, the electric shock occurred through the shower head while the woman was taking a shower. Police are now trying to establish precisely how an electrical current reached the fitting and what caused the fatal discharge. The investigation is not simply focused on the shower itself. Officers are also examining the electrical installation at the property as they work to determine what happened immediately before the woman’s death.

Possible illegal electricity connection investigated

One of the lines being looked at by investigators is the possibility that the property had an illegal connection to the electricity network. At this stage, however, that remains a hypothesis being investigated and has not been established as the cause of the woman’s death. There is no confirmed finding that an illegal connection was responsible for the electric shock.

Investigators are therefore examining the circumstances at the property alongside the electrical equipment involved. The key question is how electricity was able to reach the shower head with enough force to cause a fatal shock. The investigation will have to establish whether there was an electrical fault, a problem with the installation or another issue that allowed the current to reach the shower. Police have not publicly identified the precise source of the electricity responsible for the discharge.

Another woman treated after fatal incident

A 45-year-old woman also present at the property was attended by medical services at the following the incident. She was treated for anxiety but did not require hospital treatment. The emergency response involved both Policia local and Policia Nacional officers as well as medical personnel, following the initial 112 call from the address.

The death has now been placed under investigation while officers work to determine exactly what caused the electrical discharge and why it reached the shower head. No definitive explanation for the fatal shock has been established at this stage, and the possible illegal electricity connection remains one of the matters being examined by investigators.

The incident has caused deep concern in the Antequera community, especially because something as simple as taking a shower has ended with a young woman losing her life. What happened has left many people asking how an everyday part of life could have turned into such a tragic event. We will continue to report as the story unfolds.
