It was discovered around 14km south-east of Estepona after a pleasure boat spotted it in the water on Tuesday evening.
More than 4,500 British residents call Estepona home, but Saturday’s British Day showed that community life here is about much more than numbers.
Organised by AREME and Estepona Council, the event formed part of Compartiendo Culturas, a programme celebrating the many nationalities living in Estepona. For British residents, it offered a chance to meet, chat, support local causes and simply enjoy an afternoon together.
Stalls from groups including Age Concern Marbella-San Pedro (who have members that stretch as far as Cancelada), the American Club of Estepona (ACE), AREME and the Anglican Church reflected a side of British life in Spain that does not always make the headlines: people looking out for one another.
That spirit matters to those who have lived in Estepona for years, as well as newcomers still finding their feet.
Live music keeps the crowd smiling
Music and dancing gave the afternoon plenty of energy, with five live acts taking turns on the seafront stage.
Sunset Flyers opened at 5pm, followed by the Doña Julia Line Dancers at 6pm. Del Sol Singers and Karen Danzig performed at 7pm, Irish folk group Band O’Leros took over at 8pm, and Gary Fearon brought the programme towards its close at 9pm.
Food and market stalls and charities added to the social atmosphere, giving visitors reasons to linger and catch up.
A community that gives something back
Estepona Town Hall says 4,529 British citizens are registered as residents in the Estepona area, representing around six per cent of its population. British residents are also active in local organisations, charities and animal welfare groups.
That involvement was perhaps the most important part of British Day. Behind the Union Jack flags, food and live music was a simple message: moving abroad does not mean leaving community behind.
Estepona is home to people from 135 nationalities, and events such as this give those communities a chance to share their traditions while becoming part of the wider town.
For many British residents, Saturday was less about nostalgia and more about belonging, and showing that a community built far from home can still have a very big heart.
