Modern technology is ready to do local policing in a way human police always traditionally did with the aid of drones in road safety. Rincon de la Victoria Council recently announced the deployment of a specialised Air Security Unit (UAS). Local police officers will now operate advanced drones to monitor driving behaviour and detect dangerous manoeuvres from the air.

Cutting-edge surveillance for safer streets

High-definition cameras mounted on these unmanned aircraft will allow officials to observe traffic in real time. Officers intend to use this aerial perspective to identify motorists who ignore red lights, exceed speed limits, or fail to use indicators correctly. By providing a bird’s-eye view of the road network, the drones provide essential support to ground patrols, making it easier to spot risks that might be missed at street level.

Protecting vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, is still a top priority for this technological initiative. Local police believe that combining physical police presence with sophisticated aerial monitoring will prevent accidents and discourage reckless habits.

Strict crackdown on motorbikes starting in May

Specific enforcement measures targeting motorcycles and mopeds are scheduled to begin on the fourth of May. This targeted campaign focuses on verifying vehicle documentation, ensuring valid insurance is in place, and checking MOT (ITV) certificates. Officers will also conduct thorough inspections of the mechanical state of each bike to confirm they meet legal standards.

Illegal modifications often lead to heavy fines during these roadside checks. Noise pollution caused by non-approved exhaust systems is a particular concern for residents, and police intend to penalise those responsible for excessive acoustic levels.

Fines for technical alterations can reach €200, while operating a vehicle without the correct and valid insurance carries a much harsher penalty of up to €1,000. Rincon de la Victoria continues to invest in these digital tools and safety campaigns to improve urban coexistence and reduce the number of casualties on public highways.

Fans of authentic rhythm and soul are in for a treat this month as Southern Spain’s blues favourites, the Gangberries, are returning to Almuñecar. This well-seasoned band brings a wealth of experience to the coast, promising a night that honours the very best of the Southern blues tradition.

Veteran musicians bring decades of mastery

Experience and a history of collaborations with the best define this ensemble. Formed in 2012, the group consists of musicians who have spent over twenty years touring with iconic Spanish bands such as Tabletom, Mama Kin, and the Lito Blues Band. Their deep-rooted connection to the genre guarantees a performance that is both technically flawless and emotionally charged.

The audience can expect a foot-tapping journey through the annals of music history, delivered by professionals who live and breathe the blues. These artists have shared stages with the likes of the Richard Ray Farrell Band, honing a craft that translates perfectly to the intimate setting of a concert hall.

A tribute to rock and blues giants

Reverence for the greats sits at the heart of their setlist. Their repertoire serves as a powerful tribute to legendary figures including B.B. King, Muddy Waters, and Johnny Winter. Listeners will be treated to masterful renditions of classic tracks and the soaring guitar harmonies reminiscent of the Allman Brothers Band. Every note played reflects a dedication to the raw energy of rock ‘n’ roll, making this a must-see event for anyone who appreciates guitar-driven excellence.

The performance will no doubt revive the spirit of the Mississippi Delta and the Georgia woods right here in Almuñécar.

La Cochera Producciones is hosting this cultural event, guaranteeing a high-quality production for all attendees. Early booking is advised as local interest remains high for this specific tour date. Residents from across the province are expected to travel for this display of musical prowess.

El Trapiche is preparing for its annual festivities honouring San Isidro on May 9 and 10. The much looked-forward to weekend promises a mix of local heritage, food, and family entertainment. The weekend will welcome locals and expats as always for a series of events that define the identity of this enclave in the Axarquia region.

Exciting Saturday activities for families

Early risers can join the “Juan Jurado Lorca” painting competition starting at 8.30am at the local mayor’s office. Children can enjoy their own art contest, face painting, and a chocolate-themed snack. Traditional bicycle ribbon races and popular street games will keep the younger generation entertained throughout the day.

Music will fill the air as evening approaches. The Cristina Gallardo Dance Academy takes to the stage at 9pm, followed by a performance from Hakuna Matata. Crowds will also witness the crowning of the festival’s King and Queen. Finally, Nahuel and Darío will provide the musical soundtrack to close the first night of celebrations.

Sunday traditions and community spirit

Religious traditions will take centre stage on Sunday, May 10, with a Rociera Mass at 12.30pm. Hunger will be satisfied shortly after with a giant communal paella, served while María Oliva performs live. Kids can participate in more contests before the main event begins.

Beautiful processions through the streets conclude the weekend, featuring the San Isidro image led by the Velez-Malaga Municipal Band. A special blessing will occur at the Aerodynamics Academy during the route. The event is a great example of the traditions of the Axarquia region in general and a good way of seeing the real Spain.

Antonio Gil, president of the Amigos de El Trapiche Association, described the event as a perfect chance to strengthen community bonds. Local brotherhood Cofradía del Resucitado will manage the bar so that all the guests enjoy authentic hospitality during this unique cultural weekend.

San Isidro is a big deal in Axarquia. Nerja celebrates the famous Romería de San Isidro (pilgrimage to the caves) typically centres around Friday 15; Periana has one of the most famous festivals in the region with the main fair scheduled to run from 11 to 16 May, meaning the core celebrations will begin shortly after this coming weekend; and Alcaucin’s celebrations are generally held between 11 and 14 May.
