Pilar de la Horadada will bring its medieval history to life this August with a free historical re-enactment marking one of the most significant events in the region’s past. The performance will commemorate the 1304 Sentencia Arbitral de Torrellas, the agreement that established the frontier between the Kingdoms of Aragon and Castile in the Campo de la Horadada.

Medieval history returns to El Mojon

Pilar de la Horadada will step back more than 700 years on Saturday, 8 August, with a historical re-enactment of the Sentencia Arbitral de Torrellas, the agreement signed in 1304 that established the frontier between the Kingdoms of Aragon and Castile in the Campo de la Horadada.

The free event, beginning at 8.00 PM, will take place in the park on Calle Ciudad de Almeria in El Mojon and forms part of the inauguration of a reproduction of the historic Mojon Real boundary marker.

The re-enactment will recreate the historic agreement between King Jaime II of Aragon and King Fernando IV of Castile, whose representatives settled the territorial boundary that shaped the future of the region.

Actors in period costume will recreate the signing of the arbitration ruling, allowing visitors to experience one of the defining moments in the area’s medieval history. The performance has been designed as both an educational and entertaining event, offering an insight into the origins of the historic border between the two kingdoms.

Celebrating more than 700 years of history

The re-enactment also celebrates the installation of the Mojon Real replica, commemorating the original boundary marker that symbolised the agreement reached more than seven centuries ago.

Admission is free.

The event forms part of Pilar de la Horadada’s ongoing efforts to preserve and promote its historical heritage, giving residents and visitors the opportunity to discover the events that helped shape the municipality and the wider region. By combining live theatre with local history, organisers hope to bring an important chapter of the area’s medieval past to a new generation.

SAT Animal Rescue is appealing for new volunteers to join its friendly team at the Benimar charity shop, with extra help particularly needed on Saturday afternoons. The charity says even a few hours of spare time can make a real difference, helping to raise vital funds for rescued dogs and cats across the Costa Blanca.

Volunteers needed at Benimar charity shop

SAT Animal Rescue is looking for friendly new volunteers to join the team at its Benimar charity shop, with help especially needed for the Saturday afternoon shift from 1.00 PM to 4.00 PM.

No previous experience is needed. The charity says anyone with a few spare hours, a positive attitude and a willingness to help is welcome to apply. Every hour given helps raise vital funds to care for rescued dogs and cats across the Costa Blanca.

Volunteers help with the day-to-day running of the shop, including serving customers, sorting donations and keeping the shelves stocked. The Benimar shop has been open since 2013 and is run by around 40 volunteers, but the charity is always looking for more people to join the team.

Helping animals through community support

The shop is located on Calle Aneto, 03178 Benijofar, and is open Monday to Saturday from 10.00 AM to 4.00 PM and Sunday from 1.00 PM to 4.00 PM.

If you cannot volunteer yourself, SAT Animal Rescue is asking people to share the appeal to help find more local volunteers to support the animals in its care.

The charity relies heavily on the dedication of its volunteers to continue providing rescue, care and rehoming services for abandoned and neglected animals. By giving just a few hours each week, volunteers can play an important role in supporting the charity’s work while becoming part of a welcoming local community.

Runners and walkers can now sign up for one of the Vega Baja’s most popular sporting events, with registration officially open for the 2026 Vega Fibra 6K Popular Race in San Miguel de Salinas. Combining competitive racing, family activities and charity fundraising, the event is expected to attract hundreds of participants while raising money for the Spanish Association Against Cancer.

Entries now open for September race

Registration is now open for the 2026 Vega Fibra 6K Popular Race in San Miguel de Salinas, with places limited and early entry recommended.

The event takes place on Saturday, 5 September, and includes a 6-kilometre road race, a 3K charity walk and a programme of free children’s races. The race will once again raise funds for the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC).

The start and finish will be outside the Town Hall in Calle 19 de Abril. Children’s races begin at 5.30pm, followed by the 6K race and 3K walk at 7.00pm.

The 3-kilometre urban circuit will be completed once by walkers and twice by runners. Participants in the main events can also make an optional €3 donation, with all proceeds going to the AECC.

Race categories and registration details

Entry costs €10 for both the 6K race and the 3K walk. Registration must be completed online at alcanzatumeta.es before 11.59pm on 4 September, unless the limit of 600 participants is reached. Children’s races are free, with 200 places available.

There are categories from Under-23 through to Veterans over 65, plus local classifications. A €100 bonus will be awarded to anyone breaking the course record.

All 6K runners will receive a technical T-shirt, refreshments, luggage storage and shower facilities, with food and drinks available after the race.

The annual event has become a popular fixture on the local sporting calendar, bringing together competitive athletes, casual runners and families for an evening of sport and community spirit. Organisers are encouraging anyone wishing to take part to register early, as places are expected to fill quickly.
