Free rock concerts for Nerja’s traditional fair

Published

on

Nerja’s patron-saint fair is set for Thursday 8 to Monday, October 12, with free headline concerts in Plaza de España and capped ride prices at the fairground. Deputy mayor Angela Diaz unveiled the poster and programme this week, in honour of the Virgen de las Angustias and San Miguel Arcangel.

Who is on, and when

Thursday 8 opens at 8pm outside the town hall, with the Banda de Musica de Nerja and the pregón from local singer Cynthia Martin Cortes. At 10.30pm, Plaza de España hosts the free gala to choose the Feria queen.

One of the biggest rock bands in Spain, Mago de Oz, play Plaza de España on Friday 9 at 11.30pm. Chambao follow on Saturday 10, and El Arrebato on Sunday 11. Start times for those two have not been published yet. Monday 12, Spain’s national holiday, brings a midday Beauty and the Beast musical tribute for children, then urban acts Samueliyo Baby, Samuel G. and Jose de las Heras from 8pm. Every announced show is free, according to Nerja town hall.

Fairground prices and a quieter slot

Rides at the Recinto Ferial de los Huertos de Carabeo, just east of the Balcon de Europa, cost €3.50 from 8 to 11 October and €2 on Monday 12, billed as Children’s Day. Each evening the fairground switches the music off from 7pm to 9pm so people with sensory, hearing or mobility needs can use the attractions. Three casetas have been authorised on the site, one of them for horse riders.

Saturday 10 is the solemn procession of the two patrons. Daytime events, children’s activities and local groups fill the old town and the Balcon. A fuller timetable is still due on nerja.es.

Getting there without a fight for a space

Parking on the Carabeo ground is out, because that is the fairground. Plaza de España will be busy around the concerts and the Saturday procession. The free area by Calle del Ingenio, visible from the N-340, is the easier option, about a five-minute walk in. Blue bays are paid and timed. Green is residents only.

Last October’s fair ran a day longer and booked Maria Pelae and Camela, covered in Euro Weekly News at the time. This year’s bill is shorter and heavier on named national acts. San Miguel already had a neighbourhood party in Las Protegidas in September, the Veladilla. Anyone planning a wider trip can check the Nerja guide and the Andalucia.org listing.

Nerja turns pink as volunteers prepare for cancer awareness week

Volunteers in Nerja are getting the town ready for a week of breast cancer awareness activities, with a blushing pink makeover for a kiosk at the Balcon de Europa. The volunteers have creatively decorated the kiosk with items produced in local sewing workshops, as well as charity merchandise, to help spread the message and raise funds for the cause.

Organisers have announced that the campaign will continue with more activities from October 19 to 25, inviting residents and visitors to take part in the events and show their support.

Handmade goods help raise awareness

The work of the sewing groups gives the campaign a real personal touch, with handmade products bringing together creativity, community spirit and a shared commitment to supporting people affected by cancer.

Charity merchandise also provides an opportunity for members of the public to contribute, with purchases helping support the organisation’s fantastic work. Readers can find out more about the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), which provides support for patients and families and funds cancer research.

The decorated kiosk at one of Nerja’s best-known landmarks offers a visible reminder of the importance of breast cancer awareness, encouraging people passing through the town centre to stop, find out more and get involved.

A week of activities in Nerja

The programme is scheduled to run from Monday, October 19, to Sunday, October 25, where everyone is encouraged to join in with what they can. A full list of activities, locations and times has not yet been confirmed in the announcement but will be in due course.

Breast cancer awareness campaigns not only raise money but also encourage people to learn about the importance of recognising possible cancer symptoms and seeking medical advice when they notice changes.

For anyone wishing to support the initiative, the pink-decorated kiosk at the Balcon de Europa is a starting point for finding out more about the volunteers’ work and the activities planned for the week.

With handmade creations, charity merchandise and further events on the calendar, Nerja’s volunteers are hoping to bring the community together behind an important cause. Residents and visitors are encouraged to follow the organisers’ social media updates for further details of the October 19–25 programme and how to participate. Canillas de Albaida is preparing for a charity trail race on Sunday, October 18, with money raised going to help seven-year-old Thiago from Velez-Malaga, who lives with an ultra-rare genetic condition.

The fourth Reto Higinio mountain race will bring runners, families and supporters together for a day of sport and fundraising in the Axarquia village. Organisers have also planned children’s activities, live music and a solidarity paella, so people can support the cause without running.

Race entries closed but donations welcome

Runners can choose between two demanding mountain routes, covering 13.5 kilometres with 650 metres of climbing or 24.5 kilometres with 1,450 metres of climbing. Both routes pass through the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara and Alhama Natural Park.

However, anyone hoping to enter should be aware that race registration has closed. The official DorsalChip listing confirms that entries are no longer being accepted.

People can still help Thiago through the event’s donation arrangements. Organisers have provided a Fila 0 option for supporters who cannot take part, with all money collected through this route going to the charitable cause.

Donations can also be made by bank transfer to the solidarity account published in the official race regulations: Cajamar, IBAN ES70 3058 0719 8427 3215 2108. Donors should check the organisers’ latest instructions before transferring money.

Helping a child with an ultra-rare condition

Thiago’s condition is linked to the NALCN gene and is known as IHPRF. According to the organisers, only 98 children with the condition have been registered worldwide, including two in Spain.

His mother, Remedios Díaz, has spoken about the daily challenges facing the family and the importance of community support.

The event is organised by Canillas de Albaida Town Hall and Club Deportivo Locos de la Colina, with support from local athletics clubs, the Vamos Higinio Stop-AME association, Velez-Malaga’s Sports Department and the Axarquia municipal association.

Residents who cannot run can still help by donating or checking with organisers about attending the family activities.
