Thousands of people took to the streets of Palma on Sunday July 26 in one of Mallorca’s biggest demonstrations against mass tourism, with organisers insisting their message has been widely misunderstood.

Rather than opposing holidaymakers themselves, campaigners say they are protesting what they describe as an unsustainable tourism model that they believe is placing increasing pressure on housing, public services, infrastructure and the island’s natural resources.

The demonstration, organised by the platform Menys Turisme, Més Vida (Less Tourism, More Life), attracted between 25,000 people according to police and around 70,000 according to organisers. Protesters marched through Palma carrying banners declaring that Mallorca had reached its limit and calling for changes to the island’s tourism policies.

Housing crisis at the heart of concerns

Organisers argue that soaring visitor numbers have contributed to a worsening housing crisis, making it increasingly difficult for residents to find affordable homes. They also point to pressure on roads, water supplies, public transport and healthcare during the busiest months of the year.

Campaign spokespersons stressed that visitors themselves are not being blamed.

“We are not against tourists,” organisers said after the march. “We are against how overstretched the island has become because of too many tourists.”

The group is calling for measures including tighter controls on tourist accommodation, limits on further tourism growth and a broader economic model that is less dependent on the industry.

Police response sparks new controversy

While the march was largely peaceful, tensions escalated after its official conclusion when police prevented large numbers of demonstrators from entering the Ses Voltes area, where organisers had planned to read their manifesto.

Clashes followed, with officers using batons and rubber bullets after some protesters allegedly threw bottles and other objects. Several people were injured and the police response has since become the focus of a separate controversy.

Protest organisers are now considering launching a class-action lawsuit over the policing of the demonstration, arguing that officers used disproportionate force against peaceful demonstrators. The proposed legal action comes as official investigations continue into what happened during the final stages of the protest.

The demonstrations underline the growing debate over how Mallorca balances its status as one of Europe’s most popular holiday destinations with the challenges many residents say come with record tourism numbers.
