Al menos 132 personas han muerto en Colombia por el terremoto de magnitud 7,4 que ha sacudido el oeste del país este lunes a las 7.34 de la mañana (hora local), según el último balance entregado por la Asociación Colombiana de Ciudades Capitales a las 19.00. El presidente colombiano, Abelardo de la Espriella, ha cifrado en más de 1.500 las viviendas afectadas y ha elevado a 61 el número de edificios completamente colapsados. “Le encomiendo nuestro país al señor Jesucristo”, ha dicho el mandatario, que ha declarado la emergencia nacional y se encuentra en Bogotá. Gran parte de los fallecidos se concentra en el área metropolitana de Pereira y también se han producido graves destrozos en la ciudad de Cali, la capital del Valle del Cauca, donde el regidor, Alejandro Eder, ha comunicado que al menos una treintena de estructuras se han derrumbado “con personas atrapadas”. Los aeropuertos de Cali, Pereira, Manizales, Quibdó, Armenia, Cartago y Buenaventura suspenden sus operaciones tras sufrir daños por el seísmo.

I agree with all this. 20 years ago I could afford almost everything. Now, in a mountain village, I cannot afford to eat out anymore. My insurances have rocketed. The local supermarket is too expensive so I drive to Aldi in a city. The bars are run by amateurs and the quality of wine and food is dire. Amidst all this I retired on a poor UK pension. I am thinking of ditching my house insurance and other things. But I still love it here and also could never afford to return to the UK, even if I wanted to.
