Velez-Malaga motorbike builder stuns Europe with record six Harley-Davidson awards

Published

on

Spanish motorcycle builder Fran Manen has created European custom bike history after his Velez-Malaga workshop, Lord Drake Kustoms, claimed six major titles at the continent’s biggest Harley-Davidson gathering.

Six titles, one weekend

Competing at the European H.O.G. Rally Custom Bike Show in Cascais, Portugal, Lord Drake Kustoms entered four modified motorcycles and walked away with four championships and two runner-up finishes. No single participant has achieved this tally in one edition since the event began more than 30 years ago, delivering the strongest showing in the championship’s history.

The event is know as Europe’s most important gathering for Harley-Davidson owners and one of the largest motorcycling events anywhere, the rally brings vast amounts of entrants from across the continent each year. Manen’s success is extra incredible, partly because it comes from an independent Andalucian outfit rather than a huge multinational manufacturer or dealership network.

Babylon sweeps top prize

A single creation dominated the weekend’s headlines. Named Babylon and built specifically for the competition, it claimed the event’s three most sought-after honours – Best of Show, People’s Choice and champion of the Cruiser class, which many consider the toughest category in the contest.

Constructed on the frame of a 2005 Softail Springer and powered by a Twin Cam 88 engine, Babylon features a hand-built exhaust system, a gold-finished kick-starter and a bespoke reinterpretation of the Bar & Shield emblem. According to the workshop, nearly every visible component was redesigned or manufactured specifically for the project.

Demand proved so strong following its unveiling that Lord Drake Kustoms has now announced a limited production run. Only ten units will be produced, each finished to the same standard as the original and issued with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Decades of recognition builds a career

Founded in 2008 as a small operation in Miami, Lord Drake Kustoms now runs from two bases, its original American premises and its main headquarters in Velez-Malaga, from where finished bikes are shipped to buyers around the world.

Manen’s personal record stretches is impressive, he remains the only Spaniard to have won at Daytona Bike Week, often compared within the industry to an Oscar win, and he has taken first place at the Rat’s Hole Custom Bike Show in the United States on three occasions. Currently ranked runner-up in the World Custom Bike Building championship, he now counts six European titles and six runner-up finishes across his career.

Putting Andalucia on the map

Achievements at this level place a small family business among names historically associated with American, British and Central European engineering. Velez-Malaga has a population of fewer than 90,000, yet a workshop based there has now taken six trophies from Europe’s leading motorcycling contest, a result few builders outside the industry’s largest operations manage to reach.

Family comes first, says builder

Writing on Facebook shortly after returning from Cascais, Manen reflected on what the weekend truly meant to him. “Trophies, motorcycles and businesses will eventually fade”, he wrote, “but family remains the one constant through years of sacrifice and hard work”. He added that he hopes his children remember him not for the bikes he built or the titles he won, but for pursuing his dreams without giving up on the people closest to him.

He also thanked his wider circle of support, including relatives, close friends and his team at Lord Drake Kustoms, as well as colleagues at Nautilus Dragados, another of his business ventures, noting that no major achievement is ever built by one person alone.

La Caleta de Velez enters its fair week with a wonderful goal, focusing this year’s celebrations on raising funds for a much‑needed shade structure at the local nursery. Residents and local associations are joining forces from Thursday, July 2 to Sunday, July 5 to support the project through two solidarity food events and fun.

Strong community spirit drives the fair

La Caleta de Vélez is preparing for its annual feria, with an emphasis on practical support for local families. This year’s programme has been shaped by Deputy major David Segura, Councillor Lourdes Piña, and the local festivities committee, who have prioritised community needs and intergenerational involvement.

Fundraising for the local nursery

A main focus of the 2026 edition is a fundraising effort for Escuela Infantil Virgen del Mar, the local nursery. Money raised will go towards installing a protective shade structure, to improve outdoor conditions for young children in the intense summer heat.

Saturday’s sardinada popular, a sardine cook‑out, will be led by espeteros keeping food traditions from the Axarquia coast. On Sunday you can enjoy Paella prepared by a local neighbourhood association.

Traditions runs through the fair

La Caleta de Velez’s maritime character runs throughout the programme. The sardinada shows the town’s connection to its fishing port, one of the busiest in the region. Local dance groups, choirs, and youth football teams will also feature, giving local neighbourhood associations a platform during the fair.

Events have been designed to include all generations. Children’s day opens the fair on July 2, A Seniors’ Dinner on July 3 especially for the older residents. There is also a local pageant spanning across 3 age catergories, children, adults and seniors ensuring no one is left out.

La Caleta de Velez Fair runs July 2 to 5. Enjoy as the town celebrates with four days of music, dancing, family entertainment and delicious local food, all for a great cause.

Civil Guard Searches Frigiliana Town Hall

Civil Guard officers carried out a court authorised search at Frigiliana Town Hall this morning, gathering documentation linked to suspected misconduct in public office and misappropriation of public funds under the direction of the Court of Instruction No. 1 in Torrox.

Early‑morning operation ordered by Torrox investigative court

Civil Guard officers entered Frigiliana Town Hall early this morning under instructions from the Court of Instruction No. 1 in Torrox, (the local investigative court responsible for first‑instance criminal inquiries). Officers initiated a judicially authorised search linked to suspected misconduct in public office and misappropriation of public funds. Staff were asked to leave shortly after officers arrived, with the final worker exiting at 10:10am, according to local media. Access to the building was restricted while investigators reviewed documentation inside.

Searches extend to local offices and private homes

COPE Malaga reports that the operation went beyond the main Town Hall building. Several local departments were visited, and officers also attended private homes connected to the case. No arrests have been confirmed, and investigators have not disclosed the number of locations involved.

Confidentiality measures limits public information

A secrecy order issued by the Torrox investigative court prevents the release of detailed information about the suspected irregularities. Spanish outlets state that the case concerns potential administrative wrongdoing and financial mismanagement within the local authority. No names of individuals have been published, and no details of specific contracts or decisions have yet been released.

Political context surrounding the investigation

Frigiliana’s government is led by the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE). Party representatives have called for caution while the judicial process continues. Opposition councillors from the People’s Party (PP) have spent two years submitting complaints about alleged irregularities in contracting and public‑fund management. Media reports suggest today’s searches relate to those earlier submissions, though the court has not publicly confirmed any link.

Atmosphere in the village during the operation

Residents arriving at the Town Hall this morning found the doors closed and staff waiting outside. No uniformed officers were positioned at the entrance, as investigators worked inside the building. Activity in the centre of Frigiliana remained calm, with locals observing the situation from a distance while officers continued gathering documentation.

The case continues

Proceedings remain active, and further information will only be released once the court lifts the secrecy order. Spanish media expect additional updates once investigators complete the initial phase of evidence collection. No timeline has been provided for the next judicial actions.
