Why home care is the new gold standard for living well in Spain

For many British expats, the dream of retiring to the Costa del Sol is built on the promise of sunshine, a relaxed lifestyle, and a vibrant community. However, as the years pass, tasks that once seemed simple – managing the home, keeping track of appointments, or even daily personal care – can become more challenging.

The traditional assumption was that a move to a residential care home was the only answer. Today, however, more families are discovering a more dignified, flexible, and comforting alternative: professional home care.

The power of staying put

There is an undeniable psychological benefit to remaining in one’s own home. Surrounded by familiar memories, beloved pets, and a known neighbourhood, elderly individuals often maintain better cognitive health and a higher sense of morale. This is the philosophy behind Costa Angels, a premier provider of assisted living services all along the Costa del Sol and soon to be much further beyond.

Tailored support, not ‘one size fits all’

Every individual’s needs are unique, which is why Costa Angels rejects the ‘blanket’ approach to care. Whether it is a few hours a week to help with domestic chores and shopping, or more comprehensive 24-hour live-in care, the focus is always on empowering the individual. By introducing dedicated, international carers all with a good level of English and many multilingual, they ensure that communication – so vital in healthcare – is never a barrier.

A bridge for families

For families living all over the world, the worry of a loved one being alone in Spain can be overwhelming. Professional home care acts as a vital bridge, providing “boots on the ground” and peace of mind. From respite care that allows primary caregivers a necessary break, to specialist palliative support, the goal is to provide a safety net that feels like family.

With the right support, the golden years in Spain can remain just that – golden.

Hansik in La Cala De Mijas, a modern Korean feast

Published

Tucked away in La Cala de Mijas you can find Hansik. Opened only a few months in November they are bringing a few new dishes to the table with their Korean and Asian cuisine.

First impressions count. The team are welcoming, attentive, cheerful and created a relaxed and comfortable feel from start to finish. The background music is set at just the right level, adding atmosphere without interrupting conversation and the children in the group are made to feel welcome also.

Inside, the decor is stylish but not over the top. Gold cutlery and black napkins match the gold and black menus, complemented by green and gold chairs, gold frames with greenery and exposed modern lightbulbs giving the space a warm, inviting glow. There’s a full bar for anyone wanting to eat on the high stools, and a small outside seating area for those who prefer dining in the open air to nose at what’s happening in the street.

Larger groups can order plenty of dishes to share around the table

We were a large group so ordered plenty to share. The food arrives hot straight from the kitchen which is directly behind our table. The Korean fried chicken is a clear favourite, crispy on the outside, tender inside, and coated in their spicy Hansik sauce with Korean mayo giving it all a nice kick without being eye wateringly spicy. The cheese and hotdog corndogs are fun and satisfying, perfect for the kids.

Some interesting things to try, the tteokbokki are small sticks of chewy rice cakes in a sweet and spicy sauce that are a strange but pleasant texture.

We tried a few soups that were impressive. Mandu-guk has delicate dumplings filled with chicken and vegetables in a tasty broth with egg and seaweed. The kimchi jjigae has tofu and beef in a funky red soup. The dangmyeon, had interesting sweet potato glass noodles, beef, and vegetables and bags of flavour.

Meat dishes were the stars. The unusual combination of Korean beef ribs covered in with melted mozzarella and sweet corn fell off the bone into a melted gooey sauce. The bulgogi sliced beef marinated in a soy glaze is served with fresh lettuce leaves for wrapping, these were fresh and delicious. Finally, the lamb galbi, grilled lamb chops, came with seaweed sesame rice balls, covered in spices and tender to eat.

The drinks menu has a few different options to try something different

A mention must go to the matcha milkshakes, creamy, slightly earthy and covered in cream, and the sweet, refreshing honey iced tea. A couple of alternatives to a normal drinks menu for the younger ones that went down a storm. We didn’t opt for desserts as the drinks were enough to satisfy any sweet cravings.

The pace of the meal was ideal, not rushed and not slow and the prices were average €5 to €10 for starter and small dishes, around €8 to €15 for soups and then meat dishes sat at around €20.

Overall, Hansik was a really well-rounded dining experience with great food, comfortable surroundings, and genuinely really friendly warm service. A welcome addition to La Cala de Mijas and one to try. If you prefer to eat at home takeaway service is available.

You can find the restaurant at Blvd. de la Cala, 18 in La Cala. for more details visit their website.

Excitement is certainly building across Europe as FreakCon returns to the Costa del Sol for its celebratory tenth year. Organisers promise three full days packed with manga, comics, TV series, video games and every corner of pop culture from May 22 to 24. Crowds will fill the halls with cosplay contests, epic tournaments and interactive zones that deliver nonstop fun for every fan.

Hollywood star Giancarlo Esposito joins the line-up

Acclaimed actor Giancarlo Esposito will be arriving in Torremolinos on Sunday 24 May to meet and greet fans in person. Known worldwide for unforgettable roles in Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian and Gentlemen, he brings panels and meet-and-greet sessions that let visitors connect directly with one of television’s most intense talents. Other confirmed names will better the programme further: Musicians Coda and Tami Tamako are preparing special concerts, while popular creators including Elesky, Mister Jägger, Salva Espín and others add talks, signings and live content.

Indie games area expands for anniversary edition

Developers can get this year a dedicated space to present fresh projects in the new indie video games zone. Players test upcoming titles, offer feedback and watch a professional jury award a cash prize to the most creative entry. Cosplay fans enjoy competitions and workshops across the venue, while tournaments and quizzes keep energy levels high from morning until late evening.

K-Pop fest opens the weekend with separate programming

Friday evening launches the K-Pop Fest as a family-friendly pre-party complete with concerts, choreography sessions and food trucks. Separate tickets grant access to this opening celebration without full auditorium entry for the main days.

Tickets go on sale now via the official website freakcon.es/entradas. Daily passes for Saturday or Sunday start from €17, weekend tickets for both main days begin at €25, and K-Pop Fest entry starts from €17. Last year sold out completely with no box office sales on the day, so advance purchase remains essential. A free shuttle bus is being put on by my Mijas Council to take proud geeks to the Palacio de Congresos de Torremolinos on May 23, although precise details of stops are yet to be released.

Bringing their Bangor beats and energetic sound, the quirky and endearing Two Door Cinema Club will headline Marbella Arena on Friday, July 10 at 8pm as a stop on their international tour.

The hugely successful trio formed in Bangor, Northern Ireland, Two Door Cinema Club is made up of  Alex Trimble, Sam Halliday and Kevin Baird who rose to fame with their debut album Tourist History, reshaping 2010s indie with their sharp guitar lines and electronic polish. The album earned the Choice Music Prize for Irish Album of the Year, and breakout single “What You Know” has surpassed one billion streams.

Two Door Cinema Club are no strangers to the big stage having headlined major festivals worldwide

The trio have released a whopping five studio albums, Beacon, Gameshow, False Alarm and Keep On Smiling , each pushing their sound further into synth-pop, electro-funk and polished alt-pop territory. They are no strangers to the big stage having headlined major festivals worldwide and earned devoted audiences for high-energy sets driven by precision, dance-floor rhythms and catchy recognisable hooks.

Support on the night comes from the raw and gloriously chaotic Karavana, a Spanish indie-pop-rock band based in Madrid, famously known for their signature sound of “dirty guitars and cheesy lyrics.” The band has said they get their modern indie rock inspiration from groups like The Strokes. With this description of their energy, they are the perfect warm up act for the headline to follow.

They join a stellar line up of acts due to perform in Marbella this summer

Doors open at 8pm, with strict age rules in place, under-16s are not permitted, and 16- and 17-year-olds must attend with an adult and present a signed authorisation form. Tickets and the form are available through the Marbella Arena website and tickets can also be purchased via Ticketmaster

Two Door Cinema Club’s appearance is a fantastic addition to an already super summer line up including Kaiser Chiefs on June 20, Craig David June 27, Faithless July 9 and UB40 July 16.
