There’s nothing worse than getting in a hot, stuffy car in the middle of summer, but when the only alternative is walking, what else is there to do? Thankfully, as of Monday, June 8, visitors and locals in Mojácar now have an alternative method of transportation at their disposal, following the launch of the Hoppy electric bike rental service.

Developed in collaboration with the Mojácar Town Hall, Hoppy electric bikes will be available to rent along the promenade. 120 bikes will be available to start with, but the fleet will eventually increase to 200 over the coming months as the rollout continues across the municipality. Stationed at select points of the beachfront, the bikes are easy to spot by their bright turquoise colour.

How the Hoppy electric bike service works in Mojácar

To get started, users download the Hoppy app, available on Apple and Android devices, and scan the QR code located on the bike’s handlebar. From there, cyclists can take the bike wherever they need it to go.

At the end of the trip, riders must return the bike to an authorised Hoppy zone. They are then required to take a picture to verify it is correctly parked up, before then ending the journey through the app and paying.

The service is operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is available to anyone over the age of 18

Smart technology designed to improve safety and organisation

One of the key features of the new Hoppy system is its use of geofencing technology. This digital system allows the company to create virtual boundaries around different areas of Mojácar in order to improve safety, reduce clutter and encourage responsible use of public spaces.

Trips can only be ended in designated parking areas, helping to prevent bikes from being abandoned randomly along pavements or beachfront walkways. Certain pedestrian-heavy areas will also include reduced-speed zones or no-ride zones, where bikes automatically slow down or cannot operate at all.

According to Jacob Hammerstein, Director of Public Affairs at Hoppy, the goal is to ensure the bikes integrate smoothly into daily life in Mojácar while respecting both residents and visitors.

Sustainable transport and better connections across Mojácar

This initiative marks continued efforts by the Town Hall to promote sustainability, although Hoppy bikes also serve to connect every inch of the town, and encourage physical activity. The company says the service has been designed to support “last mile” travel, making it easier for people to move between residential areas, commercial zones, beaches and transport hubs without relying on private cars.

Electric bike schemes continue to grow across Europe

Electric bike rental schemes have already transformed mobility in cities around the world. From Barcelona and Paris to London and Amsterdam, shared bicycle networks have helped reduce congestion, lower emissions and encourage healthier lifestyles.

In many tourist destinations, e-bike schemes have also proven popular because they offer visitors a convenient and environmentally friendly way to explore local areas without adding to traffic problems during the busy summer season.

The launch is perfectly timed to coincide with Mojácar receiving the prestigious “Bike Territory” certification. Now, even more people can enjoy Mojácar by bike while helping to support cleaner and more sustainable urban transport.

Balerma ranks as Spain’s most exposed location to tsunami from Averroes fault

A recent international scientific study has pinpointed Balerma in El Ejido as the Spanish site likely to bear the brunt of tsunami energy from a rupture along the Averroes fault in the Alboran Sea. Researchers simulated a magnitude 7.0 earthquake on the fault capable of displacing the sea floor and generating a regional tsunami, directing the greatest force toward western Almeria.

Averroes’s fault and long-term hazard

The Averroes fault moves northward at around four millimetres per year, pushing the Alboran Sea. Seismologists tracked its activity over 124,000 years and identified it among submarine faults with real potential to produce a large regional tsunami. Authors describe it as seismogenic and tsunamigenic with potential danger. Recurrence for a major event stands at roughly every 31,000 years. Such studies help build coastal defences and raise awareness ahead of rare events.

Balerma exposure in simulations

Tsunami simulations show energy would not affect the Almeria coast equally. Western Almeria would experience the strongest concentration in Spain, with Balerma as the main reference. Scientific models indicate maximum wave heights up to 2.9 metres regionally. This points to possible flooding of initial coastal strips plus damage to seafront promenades, harbours, beaches and hazardous currents in low or open areas.

Earlier models linked Balerma to waves of six metres with only nine minutes of warning, against 21 minutes for Malaga. Such short times drastically limit response options.

Local reactions in Balerma

Residents of Balerma have responded calmly to the study, resigned to the risks. Rosemary Hartnett on Facebook said: “For God’s sake!  Don’t worry about things beyond your control.” On Instagram, silvia79gm says, “Oh my. We’re in the middle of that!”

But, In general, sentiment is still measured across the town. Locals suggest authorities review evacuation routes and provide clear information from the findings.

Historical tsunami events

Almeria has already experienced tsunamis in 1522 and 1887. Historical documents recorded both incidents, although limited data restricts precise details on their reach.

Damage potential, reach, sequence and evacuation window

A tsunami from the Averroes fault would bring sudden water inflow to low-lying parts of the Balerma coast. Effects would feature flooding along front line areas and considerable damage to seafront promenades, harbours and beach facilities. Powerful currents would potentially create serious risks for people and property in exposed or lower spots.

Impact would centre on the immediate shoreline and adjacent low ground. Local geography would shape the exact flooding extent.

The sequence starts with an earthquake, then rapid wave arrival, fast water rise and dangerous currents that threaten anyone close to the shore.

How long would it take for the effects of seismic activity in the Averroes fault arrive the shores near…?

According to studies published in Nature:

  • Malaga: Up to 35 minutes.
  • Motril: Approximately 21 to 30 minutes
  • Melilla: 20 to 27 minutes

How would the government alert the public?

In the event of a major incident of this nature, Spanish authorities would activate the National Tsunami Warning System immediately after detecting a major earthquake on the Averroes fault. Experts at the Instituto Geográfico Nacional assess the risk within a few minutes and issue alerts to civil protection teams. Mobile phones in coastal zones receive loud ES-Alert cell broadcast messages instructing people to head inland and uphill. Local sirens, public address systems, television and radio channels then broadcast evacuation guidance. Residents near the shore should move to higher ground on foot straight after feeling strong shaking even before official messages arrive.

Evacuation time could drop to around nine minutes in modelled scenarios for Balerma. This short period goes to show the need for established plans, visible routes and drills so people could reach safety swiftly.

Research like this makes for better protection and informed coastal communities facing rare yet serious natural risks.

There’s nothing better than a good, juicy burger and from Thursday 4 to Sunday 7 June, residents of Huércal-Overa will have the chance to try some of the best in the province when the Almería Burger Tour arrives in town.

Food lovers from across the Levante region are expected to visit Huércal-Overa for the hugely anticipated food festival. From classic smash burgers to bold and colourful combinations, the event promises something for every taste while helping to boost local tourism and hospitality businesses.

Huércal-Overa hosts the Almería Burger Tour

For four days, the Huércal-Overa fairgrounds will be turned into a burger battleground. Ten food trucks and talented chefs will park up and get straight to cooking delicious food as part of the ‘Ruta Burger 04’.

Huércal-Overa has been chosen as one of the starting points for the ambitious travelling food and leisure event, which will tour different municipalities across the province. The initiative aims to promote street food gastronomy, encourage family-friendly entertainment and help boost the local economy.

Under the slogan “The best burgers are waiting for you”, visitors will be able to enjoy some of the finest burgers and street food creations in Almería.

Food trucks bring signature burgers to Huércal-Overa

Each company has developed its own signature burger. Some, like Oveja Street Food and Street Crave, went classic. They focused more on extracting every ounce of flavour and perfecting the recipe rather than reinventing it.

Other establishments chose to experiment. Burger Mono and Fat and Furious offer some of the most daring burgers in the competition, with one burger sandwiched between bright red brioche and another covered in electric blue sauce and finished with blue Takis.

No matter your taste, all burgers will be on offer from 6pm until midnight, giving visitors plenty of time to sample a range of creations before casting their vote for their favourite burger.

Live music, family activities and entertainment

Beyond the food, organisers have designed the event as a complete entertainment experience for all ages. Throughout the four-day festival, the fairgrounds will feature a children’s zone with activities for younger visitors, alongside recreational areas equipped with table football and classic games.

DJs will perform live every evening, creating a lively atmosphere throughout the event, while prize draws and promotions will reward attendees and encourage participation. Dedicated seating and rest areas will also be available for families and groups of friends.

Positive boost for local tourism and businesses

The initiative is also expected to have a positive impact on local businesses, tourism and hospitality across Huércal-Overa and the wider region.

Mayor Domingo Fernández said the municipality was proud to host the opening event of Ruta Burger 04, adding that occasions like this provide attractive leisure alternatives for residents while encouraging visitors from across the region to discover everything Huércal-Overa has to offer.

The event takes place at the Recinto Ferial de Huércal-Overa from Thursday 4 to Sunday 7 June, running daily from 6pm until midnight.
