Malva Beach by Txema Palacio: A new culinary landmark in Estepona

Published

on

Fresh Mediterranean flavours meet Basque tradition at La Rada beach, as Chef Txema Palacio introduces a refined gastronomic experience to the Costa del Sol.

Estepona has welcomed a sophisticated addition to its shoreline with the reopening of Malva Beach by Txema Palacio. Situated directly on the sands of La Rada beach on entering Estepona, the restaurant goes further than the typical “chiringuito” concept and offers a meticulously curated environment where the Mediterranean Sea dictates the tempo of the kitchen. Harmony defines the space, which features warm timber furnishings and a relaxed hammock area designed for slow, coastal enjoyment.

Basque heritage meets Andalucian light

Chef Txema Palacio brings a distinctive identity to the table, rooted in his Bilbao upbringing. His culinary philosophy relies on impeccable product traceability and technical precision, avoiding unnecessary gimmicks. This approach creates a bridge between two Spanish territories: the rigorous techniques and rich sauces of the north and the fresh produce, olive oils, and brilliant light of the south.

Flavour serves as the fundamental starting point for each creation. Palacio focuses heavily on the balance of juices and stocks, making sure each plate carries a clear sense of purpose. Traditional methods evolve into contemporary expressions, resulting in honest dishes that invite guests to stay a little longer and soak up the calming atmosphere like an escape from the bustle.

Fire and the art of the grill

Open flames play an essential role in the Malva Beach kitchen. Grilling over hot coals adds character and depth to noble fish, shellfish, and spectacular meats. This direct, honest cooking style brings out nuances that are often lost in more complex preparations. Guests can explore this range through a specially designed six-course tasting menu, which serves as a chronological journey through the chef’s career, from his early days in Basque “casas de comidas” to his current mastery of Andalusian ingredients.

Curated wines and coastal cocktails

Exceptional beverages complete the dining experience. The cellar boasts an extensive selection of Spanish labels, with a particular emphasis on fortified wines from Andalucia and prestigious Champagnes. For those seeking a creative alternative, the cocktail menu features original signature recipes such as the Matcha Martini and the Santorini Spritz. These drinks are crafted to extend the beachside experience, providing a refreshing accompaniment to the rhythmic sound of the waves.

Malva Beach by Txema Palacio represents a commitment to quality and consistency. It is a destination where every detail, from the provenance of the vegetables to the temperature of the grill, is managed with professional care. Estepona’s gastronomic scene gains a soulful, elegant venue where the sea remains the ultimate protagonist.

Estepona is preparing for the traditional San Isidro festival on Friday. Visitors to Estepona and local residents will be able to enjoy a full day of agricultural heritage and community spirit as Estepona honours its patron saint on Friday, May 15.

Local holiday brings closures across town

On the Costa del Sol, May 15 counts as a public holiday exclusively in Estepona. Banks, schools and many public services, as well as many shops will stay closed for the day so everyone can join the festivities without work pressures.

Procession features decorated floats and traditional attire

Many of the ‘Esteponeros’ will be wearing classic country outfits with checked fabrics and floral details during the main procession. Organisers start this popular event from Iglesia de San JosĂ© in the old town. Farm vehicles, tractors and ox-drawn carts covered in flowers, leaves and fresh produce tend to fill the streets for around two and a half hours. Crowds line the route to cheer the image of San Isidro Labrador as it passes.

RomerĂa and fairground attractions bring the family fun

Earlier activities included a lively romerĂa in Los Pedregales park with music and shared meals. On the main day families head to the recinto ferial for rides, horse displays and skill competitions. Live performances and dancing will create a full community party atmosphere from afternoon into evening.

Sopa campera and local dishes dominate menus

Food stalls and casetas (marquees) will be serving rustic favourites such as sopa campera, fried fish and fresh bread. Diners should note that restaurants will undoubtedly require reservations for lunch because demand will be peaking on this special day as many extended families come together.

Event draws thousands of revellers to old town centre

Decorations with ferns, palm leaves and flower pots will transform the casco antiguo into a festive rural scene. Gigantes y cabezudos, giant characters with huge heads, will be there to entertain younger visitors at the start of processions. This celebration keeps Estepona’s farming roots alive and offers an authentic experience for those looking for genuine Andalucian traditions.

Irvine Welsh Trainspotting Sequel

Published

irvine-welsh-trainspotting-sequel

Scottish author Irvine Welsh broke the ice at Malaga’s 55th Book Fair with a self-deprecating opener, “My Spanish is very bad, sorry!” before launching into a world-premiere presentation of his new novel, Men in Love, the long-awaited sequel to Trainspotting. It was a disarming opening from a writer whose work has never shied away from brutal honesty.

Renton, Spud and Begbie are back now chasing love

Set in the late 1980s during the closing years of Thatcher’s Britain, Men in Love reunites Renton, Spud, Sick Boy and Begbie as they leave heroin behind and go their separate ways after a drug deal goes wrong. Welsh described it as focusing on a “transitional” period for the characters in their mid-twenties, a time when men start to become “serious in their quest for romance” and begin to believe in their own mortality for the first time. True to form, Welsh returns to his trademark raw style and street language to show their plunge into early adulthood.

Malaga readers ahead of the rest of Spain

In a genuine coup for book fair attendees, copies of the novel were already available to purchase at the fair before its official release in Spanish bookshops on May 13. Welsh appeared with editor and translator Carlos Pranger at the Eduardo Ocon venue, pulling in a full house eager to hear him speak.

AI, phones and why he wouldn’t want to be 20 again

Welsh did not limit himself to talking about fiction. He described artificial intelligence as “a machine that tells you what to think and say,” arguing that it strips people of context, and made a robust case for reading and study as the route to deeper knowledge. Asked whether he would want to relive his youth in today’s world, his answer was unequivocal. “I wouldn’t want to be 20 again because there’s so little freedom,” he said.

The biggest edition of the Malaga book fair

Now in its 55th edition, the Malaga Book Fair has grown to 71 stalls,  nearly 10 per cent more than last year, making it the most expansive in its history.

Men in Love from Irvine Welsh is on sale in Spain from May 13.

A.R.C.H Spring Fest delivers family entertainment and vital support for local horse & donkey rescue on May 17

Those who love spending time in the community and with animals will have a chance to have a lovely day out when A.R.C.H. hosts its hugely popular annual Spring Festival in Alhaurin el Grande on Sunday, May 17. The equine protection centre is preparing an event packed with activities for every age group while directing all proceeds towards urgent care for rescued horses and donkeys.

Plenty of entertainment fills the programme

Visitors will be able to enjoy a display from a local dog trainer who specialises in obedience and attack dogs after police dogs proved unavailable due to Andalusian election duties. Attendees can then watch the popular Fun Dog Show featuring amusing classes such as the Obstacle Race and Temptation Alley, where handlers call their pets past tempting sausages, toys and biscuits.

As every year, there will be an artisan market stocked with craft items, live music fills the air, and a barbecue serves food and drink, including vegan choices. Families can browse the ARCH stall full of merchandise and pick up details about ongoing rescue work. Many of the equine guests will be on hand to meet and greet as well.

Original artworks go on public view now

Two exceptional paintings now sit on display inside the A.R.C.H. charity shop in Alhaurin el Grande and form a key part of the fundraising drive. Artist Anna Bondar created the first piece, an acclaimed contemporary Ukrainian artist whose works appear in private collections across Ukraine, England, Hungary, Ireland and the USA. Oil on canvas and measuring 90 by 90 centimetres, the painting titled ‘In the beginning there was trust’ carries an estimated value around €2,000. Bondar donates her support because horses shaped her life through riding, silence and, above all, trust.

Janette Lockett, ASEA (Associate of the Society of Equestrian Artists (UK)), has produced the second artwork, a local equestrian specialist whose pastels capture grace and movement. Measuring 100 by 70 centimetres and presented in a black gallery frame with a signed authenticity certificate, the piece titled ‘Kite’ holds an estimated value near €1,500. Lockett knows the rescue centre well and has previously contributed her art to its cause.

Raffle and direct visits add extra appeal

A.R.C.H. volunteers are running the usual mega raffle throughout the day. Guests can walk among the horses and donkeys, including two adorable foals that have recently arrived and now require extensive medical attention.

A.R.C.H faces rising costs after taking in numerous animals at once, so feed bills and veterinary expenses continue to climb. Every ticket sale and purchase helps ease that pressure.

How to bid on the paintings

People can submit separate donation offers for each artwork by emailing donations@horserescuespain.org or messaging WhatsApp number +34 711 070 099. Messages must state ‘Offer for painting’ plus the chosen title and contact details. Bids remain open until May 31, even after the event.

Entry to the A.R.C.H Spring Fest costs nothing, so everyone can simply turn up and enjoy the occasion while backing a vital rescue operation.
