Spectacular leaps filled the waters five nautical miles out from Motril and Amuñecar just as Spain’s big solar eclipse of August 12 got under way. Dolphins turned up right on cue, filmed by the University of Granada’s Litoral de Granada-UGR team while the moon began covering the sun.

Common and striped dolphins took turns launching themselves clear of the waves, looking for all the world as if they wanted a better view of the celestial drama. Footage captured the pod mid-performance exactly when the partial eclipse peaked over Granada’s Costa Tropical, giving local residents and researchers a rare double spectacle.

Why the animals reacted so strongly

Sudden darkness often stirs marine life into becoming most active. Zooplankton rises, fish follow, and hunters such as these dolphins move in. Scientists across the Mediterranean had predicted exactly this kind of response, and the Motril clip delivered the proof in real time. Similar groups also approached shore near Malaga’s Sacaba beach the same evening, adding to the sense that the whole coastline felt the shift in light.

Spain’s first total solar eclipse in more than a century drew millions of eyes skyward. Granada province saw a deep partial covering of around 95 per cent, with the sun low on the western horizon. Clear seas and calm conditions helped the research boat stay in the perfect spot to record the action.

Costa Tropical’s growing reputation for wildlife

This stretch of coast already draws boat trips hoping to spot pods year-round. Readers following local developments can catch up on the ambitious 82km coastal walkway plan for Costa Tropical and the Motril inland marina project at Playa Granada. Recent beach restoration work after winter storms is detailed here.

Nature delivered an unexpected encore to one of the year’s biggest sky shows, reminding everyone that the Mediterranean still has plenty of surprises left.

Cajiz in the Axarquia region of Malaga province gets ready for its fourth Noche de Blues on Saturday, August 22. Local blues fans and visitors can enjoy a proper summer evening of live music starting at 9pm in the school courtyard.

New York-born guitarist, singer and harmonica player Richard Ray Farrell, who lives in the village and helped start the event, tops the bill once more. Supporting acts include Javier Martin, Sergio Diaz and Dutch vocalist Manuela Nelom, plus Spanish outfit Trio del Saco with David Quintero, Angel Quintero, Daniel Cuenca and Raul Ranea.

Free entry with food, drink and raffles for a good cause

Organisers from the Junta de Festejos de Cajiz and local authorities have put together another community night with a charitable twist. All proceeds go to the Junta de Festejos. Entry costs nothing, though a donation of five to ten euros would be welcome. Expect a food and drink area plus several raffles during the evening.

Farrell has encouraged everyone to turn out and match the success of earlier years. He describes this year’s line-up as full of talented performers who deserve the chance to show what they can do. The musician thanked the organisers for looking after every detail and helping turn the night into a regular summer tradition for Cajiz.

What to expect on the night

Music kicks off at 9pm and runs late. Previous editions drew crowds from across Velez-Malaga and the wider Axarquia. This one keeps the same friendly, open-air feel that has made it popular.

For more on blues events around the Costa del Sol, check out last year’s Cajiz blues night coverage and the Mijas Blues Night report. Further details on Farrell appear on his official site. Local updates are also available via AxarquiaPlus.

Grab a drink, settle in under the stars and enjoy some proper blues this Saturday in Cajiz.

Long-Awaited Health Centre To Open In Nerja

Locals in eastern Costa del Sol are finally seeing light at the end of the tunnel after more than twenty years of waiting. Construction on the brand-new Nerja health facility is nearing completion, with regional health authorities targeting a phased opening prior to the end of 2026, with any luck.

Being built between Avenida de Pescia and Cuesta del Ingenio near the Chillar River, the facility represents a €9.4 million investment funded through European relief funds. Regional healthcare managers will meet with site directors and contractors early in September to finalise operational schedules.

Modern medical facilities for thousands of residents

Covering 4,520 square metres over three storeys and a basement, the building offers more than double the floor space of the existing medical hub. Approximately 25,000 residents from Nerja and nearby Frigiliana will rely on the facility, which is also built to handle seasonal tourist influxes.

Inside, patients will find 26 standard consultation rooms, five multipurpose suites, and five dedicated paediatric spaces. Specialist units cover minor surgery, dentistry, physiotherapy, radiology, and critical care.

Moving operations from the old facility will happen gradually to prevent any disruption to everyday patient appointments. Medical staff, diagnostic equipment, and administrative teams are set to transition in stages across late 2026.

Major urban upgrade in progress

Plans for the facility apparently date back to 2003, though years of bureaucratic delays, site alterations, and funding debates stalled progress until construction finally kicked off in July 2024.

Future ownership of the current medical building remains undecided. Local council leaders want to convert the property for municipal use once ownership transfers over from the Junta de Andalucia.

Nearby infrastructural changes are moving forward alongside the health complex. Local authorities are processing a €27.61 million underground car park project with 847 spaces, plus a new connecting road linked to Avenida de Pescia to ease traffic flow across the town.
