Millions of holidaymakers fly into Mallorca every year without giving much thought to the airport’s official name. But after years of discussion and campaigning, Spain’s government has now confirmed that Palma Airport will officially be renamed, bringing it into line with the island’s recognised place names.

What’s changing?

The airport, currently known as Palma de Mallorca Airport, will become Palma-Mallorca Airport under the approved change. The decision follows longstanding calls from cultural and linguistic organisations that argued the previous name no longer reflected the official naming conventions used across the Balearic Islands.

While the change may seem minor to visitors, supporters say it better represents both the city of Palma and the island of Mallorca. The updated name is expected to appear gradually across official documents, signage, maps and aviation systems.

Why the debate lasted so long

The airport is already widely known by several names. Many residents simply refer to it as Son Sant Joan, after the area where it is located, while travellers often recognise it by its airport code, PMI. Despite the new official title, these familiar names are unlikely to disappear from everyday conversation.

The renaming debate has surfaced several times over the years. Previous campaigns included suggestions to honour tennis legend Rafael Nadal by naming the airport after him, although those proposals never progressed beyond public discussion. More recently, the focus shifted towards aligning the airport’s name with official geographical standards.

What it means for travellers

For passengers, the change is not expected to affect flights, bookings or travel arrangements. Airlines will continue operating as normal, and the airport’s internationally recognised IATA code, PMI, remains unchanged. The airport will also continue serving as Mallorca’s main international gateway, welcoming tens of millions of passengers each year and ranking among Spain’s busiest airports.

Although most tourists may notice little more than a different name on signs or travel documents, the decision marks the end of a long-running debate and gives Mallorca’s busiest transport hub an official title that reflects both the city it serves and the island it connects with the rest of the world.
