Sánchez strikes a controversial chord with Spotify playlist as Ceuta crisis unfolds… tone deaf or harmless fun? Credit: Instagram/PedroSanchez

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has found himself at the centre of a political storm after sharing his annual summer Spotify playlist while Spain grappled with an escalating migration crisis in Ceuta.

The light-hearted social media post, published as authorities struggled to respond to one of the country’s most serious border emergencies in recent years, prompted fierce criticism from political opponents and many social media users, who questioned whether the timing was appropriate.

In a short Instagram video, Sánchez described the playlist as “quite eclectic” before highlighting three favourite tracks: “El Baifo” by Spanish artist Quevedo, “SS26 (Spring Summer 26)” by British pop star Charli XCX and “Tantas Cosas” by Spanish singer Melani. He wished followers a happy summer and encouraged them to enjoy the music during their holidays.

What songs are on the playlist?

Why has it caused controversy?

The backlash has less to do with Sánchez’s music taste than with the timing.

The playlist appeared just as Spain was dealing with the aftermath of a major migrant influx into Ceuta, prompting emergency security measures and intense political debate over border management. Sánchez had only recently visited the enclave to address the situation before beginning his summer holiday.

Critics argued that posting holiday music recommendations while the country faced a significant humanitarian and political crisis projected the wrong image for a head of government.

Opposition politicians accused Sánchez of appearing detached from events unfolding in Ceuta, while social media users questioned whether a more sombre tone would have been appropriate.

Was the post tone deaf?

There is no evidence that Sánchez intended to trivialise the crisis. He has routinely shared reading lists and music recommendations during previous summers, and supporters could argue that maintaining regular communication on social media does not prevent a government from managing an emergency.

However, the optics proved problematic. Political communication experts have long noted that public perception is shaped as much by timing as by content. Publishing a cheerful holiday playlist while headlines remained dominated by the Ceuta crisis inevitably invited criticism, particularly from opponents looking to portray the government as disconnected from public concerns. Several media outlets described the move as being perceived by critics as insensitive because of the context in which it appeared.
