Bus boost: 59 extra daily services link Malaga and Axarquia

Published

on

Residents travelling between Malaga city and the Axarquia have more bus connections from Monday, October 26, after 59 additional daily services were introduced to tackle rising demand and overcrowding.

The expansion increases the number of daily services from 386 to 445 across routes connecting Malaga, Rincon de la Victoria, Los Rubios, Torre del Mar and Velez-Malaga, according to the official announcement of 59 additional daily bus services across Malaga and Axarquia.

The expansion is intended to improve public transport connections, particularly during peak hours.

Which bus routes get more services?

The additional journeys are distributed across four main corridors, with Torre del Mar receiving the largest increase.

The daily additions are:

  • Rincon de la Victoria: 12 extra services, an increase of 7.3 per cent.
  • Los Rubios: 11 extra services, an increase of 23.9 per cent.
  • Torre del Mar: 22 extra services, an increase of 19 per cent.
  • Velez-Malaga: 14 extra services, an increase of 23.7 per cent.

The changes affect routes connecting Malaga with Rincon de la Victoria, Los Rubios, Torre del Mar and Velez-Malaga.

Passengers can check the latest bus timetables and routes through the Malaga Metropolitan Transport Consortium before travelling.

Why are more buses being introduced?

The expansion follows an increase in passenger numbers across one of the main public transport corridors serving the eastern side of Malaga province.

Velez-Malaga joined the metropolitan transport consortium’s integrated fare system on May 1, allowing passengers to benefit from integrated and discounted fares. Read more about Velez-Malaga joining the Malaga transport network and the travel-card changes introduced at the time.

The increase in passenger numbers has also brought complaints about overcrowding, with some buses arriving at stops already full and passengers having to wait for another service.

The latest expansion is intended to bring the number of services closer to passenger demand, although it remains to be seen whether the additional journeys will be enough to resolve the problems.

Wider transport improvements across Axarquia

The latest changes follow other transport initiatives in the area, including plans to improve public transport links from Rincon de la Victoria through a planned Park & Ride facility.

Velez-Malaga has also introduced seasonal services connecting the town with Torre del Mar. Read more about Velez-Malaga’s bus connections with Torre del Mar.

Passengers should consult the official transport consortium website for current route information, timetables and fare details.

Axarquia roads finally set for safety improvements

Published

Drivers using country roads across the Axarquia could finally see improvements to road safety under a new provincial scheme to replace thousands of damaged and deteriorating traffic signs.

Diputación de Malaga (regional government) has set aside €771,748 to the Axarquia, covering 37 roads, as part of a €2.05 million programme to renew around 15,600 signs and other safety equipment across the province. The announcement adds to previous road improvements in the Axarquia.

The programme comes as road conditions continue to concern residents who rely on rural routes to travel between villages, reach work or access essential services. EWN has previously reported on the deteriorating condition of Spain’s roads.

37 Axarquia roads included in the plan

The programme covers 118 provincial roads stretching across approximately 860 kilometres. Signs and safety equipment currently in poor or deteriorating condition are due to be replaced.

Work will include new triangular, circular, square and octagonal signs, roadside posts, kilometre markers, reflective safety markers and directional panels. Some replacement signs and panels will feature illuminated technology to improve visibility.

The Axarquia has the largest allocation of the four areas covered by the programme. North Malaga and Antequera will receive €440,596, the Guadalhorce Valley €422,594 and the Serrania de Ronda €414,616. Works in the Axarquia are expected to take six months once they begin.

However, the announcement does not yet identify which individual roads will receive replacement signs, so drivers will have to wait for further details to know whether their regular routes are included.

New speed warning devices planned

The wider provincial scheme also includes 27 electronic speed indicator devices. These will measure vehicles’ speeds and display the results on LED screens, warning drivers when they are travelling too fast. They will not issue fines or penalties.

Separately, the Diputación is assessing proposals for another programme to repaint road markings across 600 kilometres of 99 provincial roads. That work would cover central and edge lines, junction markings and other painted road markings. It follows other road maintenance programmes, including resurfacing works on Malaga province roads.

While the latest announcement does not promise resurfacing or all pothole repairs, replacing worn signs and improving road markings could help make journeys safer for residents and visitors using the province’s rural road network.

A historic sugar factory on Granada province’s Costa Tropical is opening its doors to a ghostly mystery this Halloween, inviting visitors to explore its industrial past through a special guided experience.

The Fábrica del Pilar in Motril is hosting El fantasma de la Fábrica (The Ghost of the Factory), a seasonal attraction combining local history, storytelling and a spooky atmosphere. The event is part of Motril’s wider Halloween programme for 2026.

Running from October 28 to 31, the experience offers an unusual way for residents and visitors to discover one of the area’s most important industrial heritage sites.

Ghostly tours for Halloween

Guided tours are scheduled for 5pm and 6pm each day, with groups limited to 25 people per session. Advance booking is not required, making it a potential last-minute activity for families and anyone looking for something different to do over Halloween.

The story has been developed with the involvement of the guides and the municipal heritage department, using the factory’s historic surroundings to bring the mystery to life.

Although the ghost provides the Halloween theme, the real attraction is the chance to explore a site that played an important role in Motril’s industrial development.

Readers looking for more seasonal activities can also discover Halloween events across Spain, including celebrations that have become increasingly popular with British residents.

From sugar production to industrial heritage

The Fábrica Nuestra Señora del Pilar began operating in 1883 and became an important part of the sugar industry that once helped shape the local economy.

Production continued for more than a century before the factory closed in 1984. Its buildings and machinery now offer a glimpse into the working lives of the people who helped establish Motril as a centre of sugar production.

Visitors can learn more about the site’s past through the official history of the Fábrica del Pilar, published
